일단 1라운드 1번픽은 예상가능했고 2번픽도 그닥 어렵지 않았습니다. 단지 파즈의 선택인데요. 테이트는 고등학교에서 미식축구와 야구를 병행하고 있으며 대학진학이라는 변수도 있기때문에 그의 마음을 종잡을 수도 없었거니와 그를 1라운드 후보로 추천하지 않은 사이트도 있었습니다. 상당히 의외였습니다.
5번픽의 호브굿은 고딩중에서는 좋은 픽이 예상되었지만, 이렇게 Top 5안에 들리라곤 생각도 못했지만, 이미 MASN언론에서는 잭 휠러나 호프굿을 뽑을꺼란 루머가 나왔었기에 놀랄것이 없네요.

개인적으로 가장 좋은 선택이 되어버린 픽은 아론 크로우를 선택한 캔사스시티와 그랜트 그린을 선택한 오클랜드인거 같습니다. 그랜트 그린같은 경우는 이상하게 순위가 많이 하락했는데, 개인적으로 가장 빨리 올라오는 선수중에 하나일거 같습니다.
알렉스 화이트를 선택한 인디언스도 좋은 선택입니다. 이미 고딩때 그의 재능을 간파하고 로건 화이트가 계약하려했었죠.
이번 드레프트전에 이미 피로골절로 순위가 많이 뒤쳐질것이란 예상은 나왔지만 이렇게 20위권밖으로까지 밀려날줄은 몰랐습니다. 아마도 일반인보다 더 전문적이기에 그 판단의 정확성이 더 있다고 봅니다. 어쨎든 그가 잘 리바운딩한다면 미네소타입장에서는 대박픽이 될거 같습니다. 그리고 투수키우는데 일가견이 있는 미네소타이기에 믿습니다.

GM : Trade not financially motivated

The Pirates' trade of All-Star outfielder Nate McLouth had some players on the team and fans in Pittsburgh scratching their heads. General manager Neal Huntington tried to explain his rationale for the deal in an e-mail to Pirates season-ticket holders.

"I understand why some people, at first glance, may believe this move was financially motivated, but I can assure you that this was strictly a baseball decision," Huntington wrote. "In fact, our owner, Bob Nutting, was as surprised as some of our fans when we sought his approval for this trade. I am grateful that he has the faith in me, our baseball operations staff and the processes we have in place to approve a move like this, despite the risk of public backlash on him personally and the organization as a whole."

On Wednesday, the Pirates dealt McLouth, one of their best players, to the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of the Braves' top prospects, along with pitchers Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke. The 27-year-old McLouth set career highs last season with a .276 batting average, 26 homers and 94 RBIs.

First baseman Adam LaRoche was one of the more vocal Pirates players in discussing his anger toward the trade.

In his letter, Huntington points out that the players that Pittsburgh received were also rumored as being discussed in Atlanta's discussions with the San Diego Padres last offseason in talks for Jake Peavy.

개인적으로 이 트레이드를 반기고 있습니다. 분명 (트레이드되기 전의) 맥로스는 벅스의 최다 타점자이며 가장 좋은 생산력을 지닌 타자 중에 하나였습니다. 볼넷비율(10.8%)과 BABIP, WOBA지수는 갈수록 상승하고 있지만, 개선되지 않는 수비범위와 갈수록 떨어지는 UZR지수는 분명 문제가 있어 보였고 지역언론에서 꾸준히 제기되었던 그의 수비범위는 분명 향후 2~3년 후에 그는 더 이상 CF가 아닌 코너외야수가 될 것으로 예측했었습니다.

그리고 본문에서도 나와있듯이 멕커첸의 진행을 더 이상 막을 수가 없는것도 하나의 이유일 겁니다. 비단 멕커첸만이 아닌 양키스에서 데려온 타바타(Jose Tabata)의 거취도 이제는 신중히 생각해야했기에 이런 결정을 하지 않았을까 합니다.

Adrian Gonzalez is one of the best hitters in all of baseball. He's only 27 years old. He only makes about $3 million dollars per year and he's likely never headed to arbitration. He doesn't miss games (played 161 in 2007 and 162 in 2008) and he is -- by most accounts -- a great teammate and citizen.

And I think the Padres should trade him sometime this July.
공격력과 수비로 리그에서도 손 꼽히는 에드리안 곤잘레스(Adrian Gonzalez)는 여전히 27살이며 올해 단지 3M, 내년 4.75M, 2011년은 5.5M(no buyout)로 묶여있다. 그리고 그의 건강으로 따지자면 07시즌은 한 경기 결장했고, 작년은 전경기에 출장할 만큼 내구성도 갖추고 있다.

That's right, the San Diego Padres should trade their main (only?) offensive weapon instead of building around him. The main reason is that they really, really suck and it doesn't appear things are going to change anytime soon. They also don't have enough money to add through free agency, not many of their younger major-league ready players are going to have a significant enough impact to compete the next few years and they have to build from the ground up. Yes, Gonzalez is a stud -- only the Red Sox and Cardinals are getting better offensive production from first base -- but one player isn't getting the team out of this mess.

As Branch Rickey once told Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner -- before trading him to the team in the opposite dugout midseason -- "I can finish last without you."

When a team like the Padres faces such an uphill battle in rebuilding, conventional wisdom says to shed the big-ticket players with high contracts -- and they will trade Jake Peavy -- and keep the stars with lesser contracts to build around. The problem here is that the Padres can't be ready to compete for the next two years. They aren't anywhere near competing. They need a large quantity of good young players, and dealing a player as attractive as Gonzalez would be on the open market is the best way to land several stellar prospects.

There's more to the story here, too. His name is Kyle Blanks. The menacing Blanks -- he's 6-foot-6, 285 pounds -- is one of the top power hitting prospects in the league. He's only 22 years old, and he's hit eight home runs in 126 at-bats this year in triple-A. He's not necessarily major league ready just yet, but he certainly will be by 2011, where the Padres should presently have their eyes planted. Moving Gonzalez would enable them to develop their future star first baseman and be able to actually put a supporting cast around him.

Glancing around the league, the Mets may end up having interesting in Gonzalez. The Blue Jays are pitching rich -- especially when Dustin McGowan and Shawn Marcum get healthy -- and could stand to upgrade over Lyle Overbay. The Braves are starved for power and Casey Kotchman hits more like a second baseman. What if Derrek Lee's neck issue puts him out for the season? Jim Hendry might not be satisfied with Micah Hoffpauir. What if Kevin Youkilis suffered a season-ending injury and the Red Sox continued to get no offense from David Ortiz? They have tons of pitching. There are many cases of unforeseen injuries each season. Gonzalez is such a great all-around player who comes with such a modest price tag that a myriad of teams would consider pulling the trigger to win now. It would behoove the Padres to exploit any such instances.

We don't know exactly how much the Padres can land for both Gonzalez and Peavy. We do know that they are both superstars and can potentially land upwards of 10 prospects between the two of them. We also know the Padres have lost 19 of their last 23 games with the duo on the team. It's not like things can get any worse in 2009, so it's time to look toward 2011 and beyond.

Three observations

Said shortstop Jack Wilson in the Pirates locker room after watching the phenom take his cuts during a workout: "The kid is the real deal."

The kid is Pedro Alvarez -- the No. 2 pick in the 2008 draft -- and while he may not take a swing at PNC Park in 2009, he was all the buzz in Pirate City.


"It's hard not to love what you see," GM Neal Huntington said one morning, with the big smile of a guy who'd just taken a new set of wheels out for a spin. "Tremendous upside. It's been 10 months since he last played a competitive game, but we're already seeing it. You hear [first base coach] Perry Hill talk about how he likes the foundation of what he does defensively as a third baseman; you hear [hitting coach] Don Long talk about how he's got an advanced approach as a hitter; you hear Manny Sanguillen drop the Willie Stargell comparison. He's still 22 and got a long ways to go, but the ceiling, we're certainly seeing it. We're very pleased with his progress."

Listed at 6-foot-3, 233 pounds -- his teammates at Vanderbilt called him "El Toro" (The Bull) -- Alvarez, to the delight of the Pirates, reported to camp slimmed down after his conditioning was questioned this winter. Watch Alvarez take his cuts in person, and you immediately see his offensive skills: the scary bat speed that allows him to rip balls to all fields; the quick hands that permit him to let the ball go deep into the strike zone; the professional approach at the plate that allows him to consistently make solid contact. Scouts and coaches wonder if Alvarez ultimately will stay at third. He possesses a good arm, but has average range and agility. Regardless, whether it's at third or in the outfield, Alvarez will be a premier No. 3 hitter and the face of the Pirates for years to come. As for his arrival in The Show? Interestingly enough, Pirates manager John Russell hasn't ruled out the possibility that he will be starring at PNC Park this summer. Stayed tuned.

The three keys to the Pirates' season, according to Wilson: "Pitching, pitching and pitching." Last season the Pirates were dead last in the NL in team ERA (5.08), batting average against (.286) and walks (657). Enter new pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, Pittsburgh's fourth in five years. At his last stop in Philly, Kerrigan was criticized at times for being too hands-off with his pitchers; with this young Pirates staff, he's been anything but. By the second day of camp, Kerrigan had already crouched behind the plate and caught for over half of the 28 hurlers in camp. After watching film of the 2008 staff and concluding that hurlers didn't pitch inside enough, he's installed dummy hitters at the plate for his pitchers' side sessions.

Much has been made about the Pirates' run of 16 straight losing seasons. Given that this is virtually the same team that went 17-37 after the Jason Bay and Xavier Nady deals at the trade deadline and finished with its fourth consecutive 90-loss season, a 17th appears inevitable. Not so fast. Good-luck charm Eric Hinske is here. Hinske was on the '07 Red Sox and the '08 Rays, so a World Series berth for the Steel City must not be far off, right? Hinske says he feels the same kind of vibe in the Bucs clubhouse he felt a year ago in Rays camp. "In Tampa, a lot of the young guys just hadn't figured it out," he says. "Once some guys started to, it was contagious. I think the same thing can happen here. There's a lot of talent here, too, that just hasn't come out."

Said Huntington, "Anytime you see a team go from 90-plus losses to 90-plus wins, it gives you hope. It gives you reasons for optimism. You look at the Twins and they lose Johan Santana and Torii Hunter and brought in some young players and really built around their core. Projected to win somewhere in the low 70s, they won in the upper 80s and played a meaningful game one day after the season ended last year."

One day after workouts, Russell was talking about -- who else? -- The Phenom, Alvarez, when he suddenly changed the subject. "You know, you should watch [Jose] Tabata hit," he replied. "Jose Tabata is kind of going under the radar here, but this kid has a special bat as well."

Indeed, Tabata's been under Alvarez's shadow, but he's shown that he will be a big part of the Pirates future, as well. Tabata -- acquired in July in the Nady trade with the Yankees -- is expected to start the season at Class AA Altoona to start the season, but he'll get at-bats at Class AAA Indianapolis and may even take a few cuts in Pittsburgh late this year. Tabata earned a bad reputation in the Yankees organization after leaving a game early at Class AA Trenton, but the Pirates have liked Tabata's quiet attitude thus far. The Pirates have also liked what they've seen on the field this spring -- he has big gap power that they think ultimately will turn into home run power.

If you haven't noticed, Ryan Doumit has quietly emerged as a top fantasy catcher. At 28, Doumit is entering his prime and showed remarkable consistency last year -- there wasn't a month that he hit below .290. Last spring, Doumit -- a former outfielder and first baseman -- didn't even bring his catcher's mitt to camp, but then he took the starting job from Ronny Paulino. His .318 batting average would have ranked fourth in the league, but he was 37 plate appearances short of qualifying. Doumit won't fall short this year. Coaches in Pirates camp think he's primed for a big year. While he won't have any eye-popping RBI totals in the Pirates lineup, he's a decent bet to hit over .300 with close to 20 home runs.
