(현지시간으로) 4월 21일 Charlie Saponara(이하 나 or 내)는 처음으로 쉘비 밀러(Shelby Miller)를 볼 수 있는 기회를 가졌다. 6피트 3인치의 운동신경이 뛰어난 밀러는 09년 드레프트에서 카즈의 1라운드(전체 19번픽)로 뽑혔으며 대부분의 언론을 통해 카즈 최고의 유망주에 선정되었다. 이날은 벨로이트(Beloit)의 원정이었는데, 날씨가 쌀쌀하고 습기가 많은 날이었다.

Game Performance

밀러는 (주로 페스트볼과 체인지업이지만) 3개의 구질을 던졌다. 밀러에게 가장 필요로하는 피칭을 위해 의도적으로 (많은) 체인치업이 사용되었다고 생각된다. 모든 구질에 대한 구속을 측정할 수는 없었지만, 일단 내가 있었던 곳에서 측정한 구속은 아래와 같다.

Fastball: 91-93 MPH (with a good tail and sink into right-handed hitters)
Changeup: 82-83 MPH (with good tail into right-handed hitters)
Curveball: 75-76 MPH (used sparingly)

페스트볼의 구속은 그의 스카우팅 리포트보다는 다소 낮은 수치였는데, 서두에 언급했지만 아마도 벨로이트의 춥고 습기많은 날씨때문이었으리라 생각되며, 이날 경기는 예정된 경기시간보다 1시간 가량 딜레이된 후에 시작되었었다. 상대팀 타자들은 밀러의 페스트볼에 늦게 반응하면서 많은 파울을 양산했고, 배트가 많이 부러지기도 했다.

이날 내가 본 그의 피칭중에 최고는 체인지업이었다. 굉장한 피칭- 존의 왼쪽 상단에 제구될때는 거의 치기 힘든 공이었다 - 이었을뿐만 아니라 좋은 무브먼트를 보여줬으며 적절한 로케이션이 되었을때는 아주 효율적이기도 했다. 이런 체인지업의 완성도에 따라 밀러는 빅리그 선발로써의 실링에 거대한 차이를 만들어줄 것이다.

3개의 구질은 분명 뛰어났지만, (이 날) 그의 커맨드는 Great와 Good의 중간쯤이었다. 그는 가끔씩 자신의 릴리스 포인트를 잃어버리는 경향이 있었는데, 쓰리쿼터형으로 던지는 팔각도로 인한 것인거 같고, 이런 것은 일반적으로 그의 나이대에 몇몇 선수들이 겪는 것이라고 생각된다. (자신이 원하는 팔각도를) 잃어버리는 경우에 그는 오른쪽 타자 몸쪽깊숙히까지 공을 뿌리는 경향이 있는데, 이는 마치 던진다기 보다는 냅다 던짐(slinging)에 더 가까웠다. 이런 것은 그가 계속 성장하기 위해 꾸준히 관찰되어야 할 부분이다.


이날 밀러는 대부분 풀카운트에 가까운 승부를 했다. 이것은 삼진(7개)과 다량의 파울, 그리고 앞서 말한 컨트롤의 문제때문이었고, 거의 모든 타자들이 적어도 2-2 상황까지는 간거 같았다.

Differences From 2009 to 2010

밀러의 허접한 커맨드는 어제 오늘 문제가 아니었다. 프로데뷔 이후 가장 중요한 수정부분중에 하나였으며 그의 딜리버리를 꾸준히 반복되게 할려는 시도를 하고 있는 상황이기때문에 잠재적으로 그의 커맨드는 좋아질 것이다.

고딩시절 밀러는 키킹을 아주 높게 했었다. 그의 키킹은 거의 자신의 글러브를 칠 정도로 높이 가져갔지만, 지금은 현저하게 낮아졌으며 더 짧아지면서 허리위쪽으로 다리(무릎)를 들어올리는 일이 거의 없어졌다. (이런 수정으로 인해) 그는 자신의 구속에 절감없이 (투구)벨런스를 개선시켰으며, 고딩때 거의 던지지 않았던 체인지업을 더 많이 던지고 있다.

Looking to the Future

나 개인으로는 처음 밀러를 목격(관찰)했기때문에 어떤 명확한 결론을 내리기가 이르다. 하지만 그의 체인지업에 대한 무브먼트만큼은 분명 impressive했으며 그의 성장에 가장 중요한 키포인트가 될 구질이다. 딜리버리는 짧고 컴펙트해졌는데, 이는 더 좋은 커맨드를 오랫동안 유지할 수 있을 것이지만, 자신의 구속에 대해 성급해진다면(구속을 더 높이길 원한다면) 문제는 다시 발생할 가능성은 있을 것이다. 그는 이 부분에 대해 경기를 통해 많은 시간을 할해해야할 부분이다.

4이닝동안 페스트볼을 솔리드했으며, 날씨가 따뜻해지면 구속을 더 올라갈 것으로 생각된다.

Stanton, amid weeks of speculation surrounding a potential promotion from Double-A, hit a home run that reportedly traveled an estimated 500 feet on Thursday night, clearing the top of the scoreboard in Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium.

올해 2월말에 이미 mlb닷컴의 유망주 전체 3위를 차지했었던 스텐튼은 벌써 올시즌 홈런이 14개째를 기록했으며, 지난 8경기에서 5개의 홈런과 .343의 타율을 기록중이라는군요.

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reported May 2 that the Marlins feel "there is no urgency to promote the 20-year-old slugger right now," both for developmental and financial reasons related to his arbitration eligibility.
당연한 얘기겠지만, 지금 시점에서 그를 (빅리그로) 콜업시키는 것은 무의미하겠죠. 아직까지 배워야 할(뭘??) 것이 많고, 경제적인 이유(슈퍼 2 조항이라던가)도 포함이 되겠죠.

The right-handed-hitting Panorama, Calif. native is batting .450 against left-handers and .307 against righties this year. He hit 28 homers last season between Class A Advanced Jupiter and Jacksonville after clubbing 39 in 2008 for Class A Greensboro.
minorleaguesplits에서 찾아보니 올시즌 100타수에서 뜬공비율이 50%(그라운드볼비율은 37%)나 되더군요.

작년 시즌 중반에 잭슨빌로 콜업되었을때 서든리그의 노련한 투수들과 타자에게 불리한 구장탓에 홈런이 많이 감소하리라고 생각되었고, 실제로도 좋은 모습을 보여주지 못했는데, 올해는 08시즌의 그의 모습 그 이상이 되어가고 있습니다.

더더욱 무서운것은 08년에 39HR .611의 장타율을 보여주면서 58BB/153K를 당했고, 작년에는 (다소 부진한) 28HR .501의 장타율을 보여주면서 59BB/144K를 당하면서 슬러거에게 삼진은 필수구나 싶었는데, 올해는 26BB/31K를 보여주고 있네요.

스텐튼의 팔길이는 왠만한 사람의 팔길이보다 더 넓어서 (지금까지) 너무 큰 스윙으로 일관했지만, 스텐스의 수정(or 교정)과 오프스피드 피칭에 대한 이해도가 높아지면서 지금의 결과가 된거 같습니다.

이 선수 벌써부터 무서워지기 시작하네요.

Kyle Singler, voted the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, announced Monday that he will return to national champion Duke for his senior season.
NCAA 파이널포에서 MOP(Most Outstanding Player)에 선정된 카일 싱글러(Kyle Singler)가 NBA진출대신 4학년으로 복귀한다고 밝혔습니다.

Singler scored 19 points as Duke beat Butler 61-59 to win its fourth national championship and finish 35-5. He averaged 17.7 points, seven rebounds and 2.4 assists in his junior season, and had 17 games with 20 or more points while posting seven double-doubles.

"I love being here at Duke and am excited about next year," Singler said in a statement released by the university. "I had two great options in front of me, but I did not want to miss out on all of the great things to come in a senior season."
대학에서 공식성명서를 냈는데, 자신은 여전히 이곳(듀크)를 사랑하면서 다음 시즌이 기대된다면서, (NBA진출보다는) 시니어 시즌이 더 기대된다고 하는군요.

"I am looking forward to coaching Kyle in his senior year and seeing him develop more as a player and as a leader," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement.

Singler's NBA draft stock seemed to rise considerably with his impressive NCAA tournament. He scored at least 20 points in three of Duke's six victories -- getting 24 in a regional semifinal win over Purdue and 21 in the Final Four against West Virginia before finishing with 19 in the title game against Butler.

After playing both inside and outside during his first two seasons, he spent almost all of his time on the perimeter last season and shot nearly 40 percent from 3-point range.
일단 얼마전 발행된 '미리보는 10-11시즌 Top 10'에서 2위를 차지했던 듀크대는 다만 코멘트를 통해서 순위의 변동 여부는 싱글러의 복귀여부에 달려있다고 했고, 만약 싱글러가 4학년을 뛴다면 놀란 스미스(Nolan Smith), 메이슨 & 마일스 플럼리 형제(Mason and Miles Plumlee)와 함께 이번에 새로 리쿠르팅된 카이리 어빙(Kyrie Irving), 세스 커리(Seth Curry)와 함께 2년 연속 우승에 도전할 전력을 갖게 된다고 했는데, 일단 첫 퍼즐은 완성된거 같습니다.

11. James Paxton, LHP, Kentucky -- After a dispute with the NCAA, Paxton left Kentucky and has signed with the Grand Prairie AirHogs in the indy American Association. Their season starts on May 14. He had returned to Kentucky after not signing with the Blue Jays as their supplemental first-round pick. Now he'll go the indy route that worked for guys like Tanner Scheppers, Aaron Crow and Max Scherzer in the past.

16. LeVon Washington, 2B, Chipola JC, Fla. -- The stock is definitely falling for the Rays' first-round pick from a year ago. There's been some concern about a lack of energy and he's played in just 11 of his team's 22 games. Over 39 at-bats, he's hit just .231/.333/.308.

18. Stetson Allie, RHP, Olmstead Falls HS, Ohio -- I don't have much info on him yet as I was waiting for things to warm up in Ohio first.

19. Christian Colon, SS, Cal State Fullerton -- Read his Draft Report. One of the more dependable college bats who had a huge summer with Team USA, he got off to an awful start to the season, but has really come on of late. Through 26 games, he's now up to .330/.430/.615. He's got eight homers and eight steals and continues to be the type who impresses with his baseball know-how and leadership.

20. Yordy Cabrera, SS, Lakeland HS, Fla. -- Check out the Draft Report. Cabrera is one of those toolsy, dream on the potential high school bat types. The question is: Will he make consistent enough contact?

The Pirates and Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh announced a new long-term agreement on Wednesday that guarantees that at least 150 Pirates games will be televised each season. FSN Pittsburgh remains the exclusive rights-holder for Pirates regional telecasts.

The minimum 150 regular-season games that will be televised on FSN Pittsburgh in 2010 marks an all-time high by the station, which has been televising the Pirates since 1986. All telecasts will be shown in high definition.

"FSN has been a valued partner of the Pirates for more than 25 years, and we are excited to continue to build upon that outstanding partnership," Pirates president Frank Coonelly said in a release. "FSN's increased commitment to bring a record number of Pirates games to our fans -- all in high definition -- speaks to the strength of that partnership and FSN's commitment to the great Pirate fans throughout our home territory. We are extremely excited to be able to provide Pirate fans with nearly every regular season game, more Spring Training games and year-round programming focused on the club, its players and the many events that we have in the community.

"FSN Pittsburgh plans to provide additional Pirates programming throughout the year as well. The "Inside Pirates Baseball" segment will continue to be a fixture, as well as the live pregame and postgame shows. Planned offseason programming includes a monthly Hot Stove show and coverage of Pirates Caravan and PirateFest. Four Spring Training games will also be on the yearly schedule.
벅스가 FSN과 새로운 계약을 체결했습니다. 이 계약으로 피츠버그지역에서는 매시즌마다 적어도 150경기를 중계한다고 합니다.

이로써 예전처럼 NHL의 피츠버그 펭귄스가 스텐리컵이 진출하더라도 벅스경기가 방송없이 치뤄지는 경우는 없어지거나 줄어들거 같네요.

더군다나 이런 장기계약을 맺으면 구단 페이롤이 조금 더 유통적이기때문에 팀으로써도 이득이 될거 같네요.
