The year has not yet come to an end, but as of the end of November, the Pirates have signed 35 international players from nine different countries since Jan. 1, 2009. I know some of these signs were reported throughout the season, but if you're interested in seeing the entirety of the list, I've put it into a nifty comprehensive table below :

Add another eight names to the list, as the Pirates announced Monday afternoon that they had agreed to terms with another eight non-drafted free agents out of Latin America.

These additional players are : Maximo Rivera (SS), Ramses Pena (SS),  Luis Urena (OF), Arquimedes Lorenzo (RHP), Cristopher DeLeon (RHP), Luis Alfonzo Valdez (RHP), Darlin Alduey (LHP), Aneudy Merejo (RHP)

Eight days after cutting ties with utility infielder Eric Bruntlett, the Phillies are on the verge of securing his replacement.

Juan Castro, a 37-year-old free agent and veteran of 15 major-league seasons, is close to signing a contract with the Phillies, his agent said Tuesday. Castro must only pass the Phillies' medical tests next week before an agreement, likely a one-year deal worth less than $1 million, is reached.

The Phillies don't comment on potential free-agent signings until after a physical is passed. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. didn't immediately return a call Tuesday.

But after the Phillies removed Bruntlett from the 40-man roster and granted him free agency last week, Amaro said the club would prioritize defense in its attempt to rebuild the bench. Castro meets that qualification. He is a versatile defender who can play each infield position and has the most experience at shortstop and second base.

Jimmy Rollins has played an average of 155 games over the past nine seasons. Chase Utley has played an average of 151 games over the past five seasons. Utley, in particular, has worn down in the second half, batting only .246 after the All-Star break this season.

"If you look at the Phillies' bench the last couple of years, there really hasn't been a true shortstop."

Castro, who made $700,000 in 2009, drew interest from several teams, including the Dodgers, Suarez said. He batted .277 in 57 games last season for the Dodgers. Of his 29 starts, 19 came at shortstop, eight at second base and two at third base, and he batted .266 (25-for-94) as a starter. He's a .230 hitter in 15 seasons with the Dodgers, Reds, Twins and Orioles, and at this point in his career, he is more eager to win a World Series than be an everyday player.

벅스의 마이너리거들은 Scottsdale Scorpions에 소속되어서 출전했는데, 이 팀은 애리조나, 피츠버그, 필라델피아, SF, 시카고 컵스, 콜로라도의 유망주들로 구성되어 있는 팀입니다.

이 중 벅스의 마이너리거는 총 6명이 참가했습니다. 하나하나 나열해보죠.

체이스 다노(Chase D'Arnaud)

필리스의 유망주 트레비스 다노(Travis D'Arnaud)의 2살 형이기도 한 체이스는 작년 벅스 4라운드(전체 114번픽)로 지명되었습니다.
벅스 내 지명동기이자 다노보다 낮은 6라운드(전체 174번픽)에 지명된 로빈 그로스맨(Robbie Grossman)보다 낮은 평가를 받았지만, 그로스맨이 올시즌 엄청난 삼진(164K)을 당하며 싱글 A에서만 뛰는 사이 다노는 싱글 A와 상위 싱글 A에서 비슷한 타석수(싱글 : 255타석, 상위 싱글 A : 253타수)를 보장받으며 좋은 활약을 했고, 린츠버그(벅스 상위 싱글 A팀)가 리그 우승을 차지하는데 공을 세웠습니다. 물론 정작 중요한 포스트시즌에서는 삽질을 했지만, 이런 경험이 그에겐 플러스 요인이 될 겁니다.

시즌 후 AFL 맴버로 합류한 다노는 20경기에 출전해 무안타경기가 3경기뿐일 정도로 꾸준한 타격을 선보였는데, 대부분 팀의 선두타자로 활약한 덕분(?)에 이번 AFL 도루리더(13도루/2도루자)가 되었습니다.

브라이언 프라이데이(Brian Friday)

빅리그의 빅슬러(Brian Bixler)나 루이스 크루즈(Luis Cruz)와 비슷한 유형의 타입인 프라이데이는 타격보단 수비력으로 주목을 받고 있는 선수입니다.
이 선수와 중복되는 느낌이 벌써 두 선수나 있는데 굳이 AFL에 보냈어야 하느냐는 의문이 생기네요. 차리리 올해 부상으로 경기감각이 전혀 없는 닐 워커(Neil Walker)나 올해 1라운더인 산체스(Tony Sanchez)를 보내는게 좋지 않았을까 하는 생각까지 드네요.

워커의 경우는 빅리그에서 38타수나 기록했기때문에 AFL명단에 들 수 있을지는 잘 모르겠네요. 산체스는 Scottsdale Scorpions의 주전포수인 포지(Buster Posey)가 있기때문에 불가능했을 수도 있겠네요.

일단 전체적인 기대치는 AAA의 레귤러 유격수입니다.

호세 타바타(Jose Tabata)

벅스가 이번 AFL에 투수 3명, 타자 3명을 보냈는데, 투타에서 가장 좋은 활약을 한 선수에 해당되는 타바타는 양키스의 유망주로 널리 알려졌던 인물입니다.
작년에 벅스로 와서 좋은 시즌을 보내며 기대를 갇게 했지만, 올초에 뜻하지않는 불상사(아내가 남의 아이를 유괴하는 범죄를 저질렀죠)를 겪으며 심적으로 야구에만 집중할 수 없는 환경에 놓였습니다.

그리고 애틀란타에서 고키스(Gorkys Hernandez)가, 네츠에서 밀리지(Lastings Milledge)가 건너오면서 한때 벅스의 CF라인에 병목현상까지 발생하게 되었습니다.
다행이 멕커첸이 맥클라우스의 이적으로 빅리그로 승격하고, 밀리지가 빅리그로 승격하면서 AAA에서는 타바타, AA에서는 고키스가 정착하게 되면서 다시 한 번 좋은 시즌을 보냈습니다.

AFL 마지막날 경기에서 7타수 6안타를 기록하면서 최고의 마무리로 시즌을 끝낸 타바타는 일단 내년시작을 인디애나폴리스에서 시작할 것으로 예상됩니다. 헌팅턴단장이 3M정도의 외야수를 영입할 생각이라고 했지만, 현실적으로 그런 돈을 지불하고 데려올 외야수라면 차라리 따른곳에 돈을 썼으면 좋겠네요.

일단 전문가들은 타바타가 코너 외야수로 뛰기에는 파워가 부족하다는 평가를 내리고 있는데, 원래 포지션인 CF로 갈수도 없는 노릇이죠. 이미 벅스에는 그들의 '박힌 돌'인 엔드류 멕커첸이 있으니까요.
다만 밀리지가 메츠와 네츠시절의 '땡깡'을 보여주며 삽질을 한다면 생각보다 일은 쉽게 해결될 가능성도 있어보입니다.

다니엘 모스코스(Danny Moskos)

07년 벅스 드레프트 1라운드(전체 4번픽)로 뽑힌 모스코스에게는 항상 전체 5번픽으로 뽑힌 위터스(Matt Wieters)의 이름이 따라다닙니다. 벅스의 사정을 생각한다면 사인어빌러티가 좀 더 가능했던 모스코스를 선택하게 된 이유이기도 합니다.

모스코스는 드레프트된 07년(15.2이닝)과 08년(110.1이닝)에 부상으로 많은 이닝을 소화하지 못하면서 벅스구단에서조차 비웃음을 사게 되었습니다.
하지만 올해 오랜 부상에서 탈출하며 150이닝가까이(149이닝)를 투구했습니다.
일단 내년에 AA에서 시작하다가 AAA로 콜업되거나 처음부터 AAA에서 시작할 수도 있을거 같습니다.
드레프트된 후 2년밖에 지나지않았기때문에 아직 룰 5 드레프트 대상자가 아니어서 조금은 여유로운 상황이기도 합니다.

이번 AFL에서는 릴리프로 던졌는데, 이게 벅스에서 부탁한 사항인지는 알려지지 않았는데, 일부 전문가들은 그의 최대 실링을 스윙맨으로 보기때문에 벅스에서 지시한 사항일 수도 있다는 생각이 드네요.
물론 오랜 부상때문에 선발을 배제시켰을 수도 있습니다.

도니 빌(Donnie Veal)

작년 룰 5 드레프트로 컵스에서 데려온 빌은 시즌 내내 부상으로 빅리그와 마이너를 오르락거리며 2만 5천불이라도 아꼈어야 하지않나 하는 평가까지 나왔지만, 부상을 털어내고 AFL에서 대활약을 하며 내년시즌 기대를 갇게 했습니다. 7번의 선발등판 중 한 경기에서 난타(2.1이닝동안 5피안타 3실점)당한 것을 제외하곤 준수한 성적을 찍었고, 11월 2일에는 '이 주의 AFL 투수'로 선정되기도 했습니다.

내년 벅스 로테이션은 폴 마홈, 잭 듀크, 로스 오렌더프, 케빈 하트(or 호세 아스카니오), 찰리 모튼으로 구성될 가능성이 높은지라 로테이션 진입을 어려울 거 같습니다. 일단 빌은 내년에 롱릴리프나 6~7회 멀티이닝 릴리프가 될 가능성이 높을 겁니다.

앤써니 왓슨(Tony Watson)

06년 볼티모어의 17라운드로 지명되었지만, 계약을 거부하고 이듬해인 07년 벅스의 9라운드(전체 278번픽)로 계약을 한 왓슨은 올해 부상으로 인해 15.1이닝만을 투구했습니다.
07년도에는 뉴욕팬리그에서 미드시즌 올스타로 선정될만큼 가치있는 투구를 하며 08시즌까지 상승세를 이어갔지만, 올해 부상으로 한순간에 가치가 폭락했습니다.
커리어내내 선발투수였던 왓슨은 AFL에서 릴리프로만 투구했는데, 아무래도 투구리듬을 찾게 해줄려는 배려가 아닐까 싶네요. 일단 플라이볼형 투수이기때문에 홈런만 줄인다면(작년에 151.2이닝투구하며 16피홈런) 괜찮은 4선발은 될 수 있어 보입니다만 반대로 AAA형 투수가 될 가능성도 높습니다. 내년에 앨투나(더블 A)에서 시즌을 시작하겠지만, 부상으로 인해 자신의 포지션을 결정해야할 기로에 있는 한 해가 될거 같네요.

The Pirates made a flurry of roster moves before Friday's midnight ET deadline, setting the 40-man roster in advance of next month's Rule 5 Draft.
다음달 10일 윈터미팅 마지막날 열리는 룰 5 드레프트에 대비하여 벅스의 40인 로스터에 변화가 왔습니다.

As expected, the Bucs added pitchers Brad Lincoln and Bryan Morris to the roster, as well as outfielder Gorkys Hernandez. Lincoln, the organization's first-round pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, is in position to make his Major League debut at some point during the 2010 season. Hernandez and Morris are considered further away from the big leagues, but each was a highly touted acquisition in trades made by general manager Neal Huntington over the past two seasons.

The Pirates also elected to protect right-hander Ramon Aguero. Though his name is not as well recognized as the other three, Aguero's upside was too intriguing to leave him available to be taken by another club.

Aguero's performance slipped in 2008, but he showed an impressive rebound in '09. Aguero, who was signed as a non-drafted free agent in July '05, went 2-4 with a 3.86 ERA in 39 games (three starts) last year in low-A West Virginia, high-A Lynchburg and Double-A Altoona.

"He's a potential back-end reliever," Huntington said. "He has a big arm and sinker. He's fearless and throws strikes."

린컨은 06년 드레프트 벅스의 1라운더출신으로 지금껏 부상과 부진으로 욕을 먹다가 올해 좋은 활약을 보이며 AAA까지 올라왔습니다.
모리스와 헤르난데스는 최근 다저스와 보스턴과의 3각트레이드 & 애틀란타와의 트레이드로 건너온 유망주입니다.
아게로는 내년에 25살의 릴리프인데, 올해 더블 A에서 강속구를 뿌리면서 부각되기 시작했습니다.

In addition to protecting these four Minor League players, the Pirates made three other roster additions. Jose Ascanio and Evan Meek were both reinstated from the 60-day disabled list, and right-hander Chris Jakubauskas was claimed off waivers from Seattle.

Jakubauskas, 30, made 35 appearances (eight starts) for the Mariners in 2009 and finished 6-7 with a 5.32 ERA. Pittsburgh plans to give Jakubauskas the opportunity to compete for a spot in next year's bullpen.
그 외에 60일자 DL에 있었던 호세 아스카니오(Jose Ascanio)와 이븐 미크(Evan Meek)가 40인 로스터에 복귀했고, 최근 시애틀에서 방출된 크리스 재커바우스커스(Chris Jakubauskas)를 클레임 걸었습니다.

In order to clear a roster spot for Jakubauskas, however, the Pirates made the somewhat surprising decision to designate right-hander Jeff Karstens for assignment.

Huntington explained the reasoning for the move as simply to give the club more bullpen flexibility. Karstens was going to enter '10 with no options remaining. Jakubauskas, on the other hand, does have options left, meaning that if he doesn't make the team out of Spring Training, the Pirates can easily send him to Triple-A to start the season.

"We feel like he and Jeff can fill a similar role on the club, but Chris has the options remaining," Huntington said. "It's a calculated risk."

The Pirates have 10 days to trade, release or outright Karstens to the Minors -- if he clears waivers. Huntington said the club will explore the trade market for the right-hander.

Pittsburgh designated two other players -- catcher Robinzon Diaz and lefty Justin Thomas -- in order to finish clearing roster space for Friday's additions.

Though Diaz did fare pretty well offensively while he was with the big league club during parts of the '09 season, he remained behind Ryan Doumit and Jason Jaramillo on the Pirates' depth chart going into next year. And like Karstens, Diaz was out of options, meaning that he would have been placed on waivers next spring if he hadn't made the Opening Day roster.

The Pirates have 10 days to trade or release Diaz, who could then become a Minor League free agent. Based on Diaz's reaction to spending the year behind Doumit and Jaramillo, the Pirates do not anticipate him showing interest in returning.

"We welcome him back, but the reality is that he was frustrated at times this year as guys passed him by," Huntington said. "It's our anticipation that he would sign elsewhere."

Without Diaz, catcher Erik Kratz moves up to third on the Major League catching depth chart. Huntington did add, though, that the Pirates will continue to explore free agents to see if the team can improve that depth.

"We feel comfortable with Doumit, Jaramillo and Kratz as our emergency third guy," Huntington said. "But we'll look at the Major League and Minor League market to see if there is somebody that complements our club."

Thomas spent less than a month on the Pirates' roster after being claimed off waivers Oct. 29. He had been expected to compete for a spot as a left-handed reliever in Spring Training, and that's still the Pirates' hope, assuming the lefty is able to sneak through waivers unclaimed.

"We think he can help," Huntington said. "We like Justin and are certainly hopeful that we are able to win the gamble. If he is able to get through, it really doesn't change his standing with the club. We just felt there were other young players that we had to get protected."

디아즈의 경우는 카스텐스와 동일하게 마이너 옵션이 없기때문에 그를 계속 보유하려면 내년 오프닝데이때부터 로스터에 포함시켜야 하는데, 이미 빅리그 로스터 포수자리는 주전의 더밋(Ryan Doumit)과 백업인 하라미요(Jason Jaramillo)가 있기때문에 사실상 불필요한 자리입니다. 해서 이런 조취를 행한 것이라는군요.
일단 헌팅턴은 그가 돌아오기를 바란다는데, 다른 곳으로 갈 확률이 있다는군요.
40인 로스터에 포수 2명만 두는 위험부담을 덜기 위해 일단은 에릭 크라츠(Erik Kratz)를 포함시켰지만 오프시즌동안 제 3의 포수에 대해서는 꾸준히 관찰하겠다는군요. 근대 40인 로스터는 이미 꽉 찼는데 어떻게 포함시켰는지는 모르겠네요. 공식 홈페이지에 이름도 없고, Transactions을 찾아봐도 없던데....

아무튼 크라츠는 얼마전 발표된 AAA 시즌 후 올스타에 선정되었습니다. 이것은 유망주이건 아니건 상관없이 그 해에 좋은 활약을 한 선수를 선정하는 것인데, 319타수동안 .273/.337/.470 의 성적을 찍었습니다.

With Friday's moves, the Pirates have a full 40-man roster. If they want to make a selection in the Rule 5 Draft, they will have to clear yet another roster spot to do so.

When asked if the Pirates are likely to make a Rule 5 selection, Huntington remained noncommittal. "It's a possibility," Huntington said. "Not a definite. We feel like we've enjoyed some success in the last few Rule 5s and still have some time to evaluate rosters. If there's a luxury of picking second, it's that if there are two players we like, we can create the roster spot."

The Pirates left a number of Minor League players unprotected for the Rule 5 Draft, including infielder Shelby Ford, who was the club's third-round pick in 2006. However, if another team selects an unprotected player from the Pirates, that player would have to remain on the selecting club's 25-man roster through the entirety of the 2010 season or otherwise offered back to Pittsburgh for $25,000 -- half the cost for selecting him.

Steve Williams, 45, left his Kansas City Royals post as assistant director of scouting after three years to become a major-league scout with the Pirates, the club announced this evening. He will assume much the same duties held by special assistants to general manager Neal Huntington, who announced his hiring in a news release.

It's Williams' first time toiling in the National League. Before the Royals, Williams was the Midwest scouting supervisor (2000-01) and East Coast supervisor (2002-06) with the Detroit Tigers. He was an area scout for Minnesota (1988-95) and Toronto (1995-99) prior to that.

Williams, a four-year letterwinner with Clemson's baseball team in the late 1980s, spent the past six years as president of the Buck O'Neil Scouting and Coaches Association.

캔사스시티에 있기전에는 디트로이트 소속으로 미드웨스트와 동부지역 슈퍼바이저를 역임했다고 합니다. 최근들어 미중부지역에서 많은 유망주(그래봐야 CA지역보다는 양적으로 적습니다만)가 배출되고 있고, 캔사스시티가 최근에 좋은 유망주를 많이 드레프트한 걸 생각해본다면 좋은 영입인거 같습니다.

일단 헌팅턴은 윌리엄스의 경험을 여기에서도 보여주길 바란다고 하네요. 내년 드레프트에서 기대해봐야겠습니다.
