There are reports that the Pirates are looking to deal Jack Wilson to the Tigers, among other teams. Any idea who the Pirates might be interested in acquiring in such a deal?

The Pirates' desired return for Wilson isn't exactly set in stone, but this much can be expected: They'd look for a trade that would net the organization prospects or young Major League players. Should sound familiar, right? The Pirates do have other needs this offseason -- a veteran starter, a right-handed bat, bench players -- but I don't envision the Pirates addressing those areas in a trade for Wilson.

Pitching is certainly high on the organization's radar, especially young pitching. I would imagine that any deal would have to include at least one pitcher coming Pittsburgh's way. And ideally, trading away Wilson would net the Pirates a young shortstop who could be groomed -- or even be ready -- to take Wilson's place. However, that's not going to be a deal breaker, as the Pirates could look to obtain a young shortstop through a separate deal.

However, before packing away those No. 2 jerseys, let's not assume a deal is done. Remember, the Pirates are going to be choosy in whom they seek, and if they believe that Wilson could net more by coming back healthy next year and producing better offensive numbers, he might be back. The market doesn't seem to have a lot of suitors for Wilson, which might work against the Bucs in their attempts to trade him.

Management certainly liked what it saw out of Cruz in Spring Training, in the Minors and with the Major League club last year. However, as GM Neal Huntington and manager John Russell talked about Cruz and the '09 team, they continually referred to him as being a good utility infield option moving forward. That's not exactly resounding confidence in terms of Cruz being ready to start.

Cruz is adequate defensively, but his offensive numbers leave a lot to be desired. Much like Bixler, Cruz often looked overmatched at the plate in his time with the Pirates this year, and it's hard to envision the 24-year-old infielder making so much of an improvement that he will be offensively ready to play every day. A utility job certainly seems much more of an immediate fit.

You are correct in that the Pirates are optimistic and excited about the budding careers of Mercer and D'Arnaud and the possibility of either being the shortstop of the future. When I referenced in a recent mailbag who Pirates management might be considering as a possible shortstop of the future, I was doing so looking at the more immediate future. That's why D'Arnaud and Mercer weren't mentioned.

But more specifically, yes, in talking with those who worked with both Mercer and D'Arnaud, the feedback was especially encouraging. Still, they likely sit about three years away from being Major League ready.

Am I the only person who thinks Ian Snell looked much more effective on six days' rest? I'm suggesting he may be more apt at working out of the back of the bullpen late in games when he could feel more comfortable letting it all go for one inning rather than pacing himself for an entire start.

It's an interesting suggestion, Chris, and you're not the only person who has e-mailed expressing an opinion that Snell would be better off in the 'pen than in the rotation. Here are some numbers to chew on. In his career, Snell has made 51 starts on four days' rest. His cumulative ERA in those games is 4.96. In 35 games pitched on five days' rest, Snell has a 3.91 ERA. And the righty has a 5.18 ERA in 18 starts with six days or more of rest.

That is certainly evidence that Snell's best results (on average) come when he pitches on five days' rest, though he often does in a five-man rotation anyway when there's an off-day between starts. With three solid pitches and a proven ability to maintain his velocity late into games when healthy, Snell has shown no reason why he can't be a starter in the Majors long-term. Interestingly enough, he commented in September (when the Pirates were going with a six-man rotation) that he much preferred pitching on four- to five days' rest than five to six.

Snell's biggest room for improvement isn't with his stamina, but with his pitch location and mental fortitude. The right-hander still has a penchant for letting external factors affect his performance. And it has been appropriately noted that Snell has been quite successful when he capitalizes on pitching inside. He needs to make that a more consistent approach, however.

Wow, while I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to have for dinner tonight, I've got readers already looking ahead at next June's Draft. Maybe this will disappoint you, but I have no projections to offer. My focus right now is on the free-agency market and trade winds, leaving little time to get into Draft projections. I'll leave that to those who follow the college and high school seasons much more closely than I can.

대학때부터 꾸준히 선발투수로 뛰어온 그가 이번 AFL에서는 릴리프로, 것도 1, 2이닝을 소화하는 숏릴리프로 뛰었습니다. 아무래도 터무니없는 피안타율로 인해 팀에서 AFL 코칭스텝에게 요청한게 아닌가 싶네요. 별 기대는 안합니다.

데릭 호킨스(Derek Hankins)

이 선수도 커리어동안 계속 선발로 뛰었지만, AFL에서는 릴리프로 뛰었습니다.
역시 높은 피안타율이 문제군요.

제럴드 휴즈(Jared Hughes)

AFL에서의 성적은 참담합니다.
이 얘기를 먼저 했었어야 했는데...암튼 올해 벅스 조직의 투수진들의 성적은 전체적으로 참담합니다. 그래서 벅스의 오프시즌에 헌팅턴이 제일 먼저 칼을 빼듯것이 조직마이너팀의 코칭스텝의 거의 물갈이였습니다.

일달 휴즈는 22살의 더블A 선수인지라 아직은 지켜봐야 할 거 같습니다만 너무 성적이 참담하군요.

제프 슈스(Jeff Sues)

대학때는 스윙맨으로 뛰었지만, 프로에 와서는 완전한 릴리프로 변신했습니다. 일단 나이가 많아서 기대는 크게 하지 않습니다만 이번 40인 로스터에 포함되었습니다.

일단 AFL에서는 망가진 느낌이지만, 시즌 내내 솔리드한 불펜요원이었습니다. 내년에 6회를 책임지지 않을까 싶습니다. 물론 좋은 활약을 펼친다면 말이죠.

수비로 대표된다고 할 수 있습니다. 공격력은 기대하지 않습니다. 

제이미 로막(Jamie Romak)

한 번 포스팅 한 적이 있는데, (형)라로쉬와 함께 벅스로 넘어온 선수입니다.

이번에 40인 로스터에 포함시키지 않은게 잠재적인 불안요소입니다. 이 선수를 포함시켰어야 하는데도 말이죠.

일단 애틀란타에 의해 드레프트되었을때는 3루수로 뛰었지만, 이젠 1루수 겸 외야수로 뛰고 있습니다. 올해 린츠버그에서 역시 1루수 겸 외야수로 뛰었지만, 시즌 후반에 앨투나로 콜업되어서는 줄곧 1루수로만 출전했습니다. 앨투나에서는 삽질했구요. 그 삽질은 AFL까지 이어졌습니다. 이게 영향을 미친건 아닌가 하는 생각이지만 로막의 슬럼프는 일시적일 겁니다. 그는 프로 커리어 내내 솔리드한 출루율과 장타율을 보여주었기 때문이죠. 다만 삼진갯수가 06년에 101개, 07년도 114개, 올해 127개, AFL에서는 66타석에 18개를 기록했다는게 불안요소입니다.

하와이 윈터리그 결산

좀 늦은감이 있지만, 이번 하와이 윈터리그에는 벅스 선수들을 총 7명을 보냈습니다.

벅스 선수들이 소속되었던 팀은 웨스트 오하우 케인파이어스(West Oahu CaneFires)입니다. 양 디비전 최고 승률팀끼리 맞붙는 최종전까지 갔지만, 아쉽게(?) 와이키키 비치보이스(Waikiki BeachBays)에게 졌습니다.

헤리슨 비숍(Harrison Bishop)

05년에 볼티모어 40라운드(전체 1202번)으로 지명되었지만, 대학교로 진학하고 07년에 벅스에 의해 17라운드(전체 518번)으로 지명되었습니다.

대학교때부터 줄곧 릴리프로 뛰어왔기 왔습니다. 대충 1, 2이닝을 소화하는 투수입니다.

비숍은 일단 피안타율을 줄여야만 더 높은 곳으로 올라갈 수 있다고 생각됩니다. 릴리프인 투수가 이닝당 하나씩의 안타를 맞는다면 투수코치나 감독들에게 신뢰가 가지 않을테니 말이죠. 안타의 가치랄까요? 주자 없는 상황보다 주자가 있을시, 특히 스코어링 포지션이 주자가 있을때, 유독 피안타율이 높네요. 이건 확실히 불안요소입니다.

카일 블롬(Kyle Bloom)

이번 HWB에서 올타임 HWB에 투수부분에 상을 받았습니다. 올해의 투수상은 따로 있구요.

대학때는 완투경험도 있지만, 아무래도 마이너에서는 선수(특히 투수) 보호차원에게 길게 한 번에 많은 이닝을 소화시키게 하진 않죠.

근대 이 선수를 왜 40인로스터에 포함시키지 않았는지 모르겠네요. 일단 BA에서는 이번 룰 5 드레프트에서 괜찮은 좌완 투수로 선정되기도 했습니다. 이 말인 즉슨, 빼앗길수도 있다는 말이죠.

뭐 보시면 아시겠지만, 솔리드합니다. 사진에는 나타나지 않았지만, 올시즌 앨투나에서 GF가 2개나 됩니다. 이 GF는 Game Finish의 약자로 타이트한 상황에서 경기를 마무리 지은 걸 말하죠. 마무리투수로 말한다면 터프세이브 정도 됩니다. 이건 선발투수가 마지막까지 집중력이 있고, 위기상황에서 대처능력이 탁월했다는 걸 보여주죠. 이런 선수를 40인 로스터에 포함시키지 않다니....왠지 헌팅턴이 또 실수한듯.

에릭 크레브스(Eric Krebs)

전혀 발전이 없는 선수입니다. 패스!

모이세스 로블레스(Moises Robles)

84년 4월생이 올해 AA 앤투나에서 이닝보다 10개가 더 많은 피안타를 기록한 릴리프. 포기.

마일스 듀햄(Miles Durham)

1루수겸 외야수입니다. 히코리(Hickory)에서 잘한다잘한다해서 린츠버그(Lynchburg)로 올렸더니 삽질했습니다. HWB에서는 그나마 다시 리바운딩한 모습을 보였습니다. 하와이 윈터리그가 투수리그이다보니 이 정도 성적도 괜찮다고 봅니다만 나이가 25살이군요.

개인적으로 타자유망주를 평가하는 기준은 BB/SO인데 많이 개선해야 상위레벨로 올라갈듯 합니다. 수비쪽에서는 1루수보다 외야수의 가치가 더 높아보입니다. 수비스텟을 사실 크게 믿지는 않지만, 일단 히코리에서 600번의 수비기회에서는 어시스트가 35개, 린츠버그에서 95번의 수비기회에서는 6개의 어시스트 등으로 볼때 괜찮은거 같지만 나이가 좀 많군요.

브라이언 프라이데이(Brian Friday)

HWB에서는 망했지만, 여전히 출루율을 좋군요. 1 : 1에 육박하는 BB/SO비율은 22살의 상위 싱글A선수에게 관심을 갇게 합니다. 아직 어린 나이이고, 파워라는 측면은 가장 늦게 발전하기 때문에 크게 걱정하진 않습니다. 홈런은 아직 거의 나오지 않지만 2루타 수치를 보면 그 2루타의 대부분이 나중에 경험과 근육이 생기면서 홈런으로 바뀔 가능성이 높습니다.

짐 리그린츠?(Jim Negrych)(주 - 발음을 어케 하는지 모르겠네요)

올해의 피츠버그 마이너 선수에 선정되었습니다. 뭐 당연한 선택입니다. 일단 이번 하와이 윈터리그에 출전한 벅스 선수중에 가장 전도유망한 선수입니다. 타격하나는 좋죠. 단지(?) 수비가 문제입니다. 현재는 2루수로 뛰고 있지만, 아마 3루수로 컨버전을 힘들 겁니다. 상위레벨에 닐 워커와 올해 드레프트된 알바레스가 있기 때문이죠.

또한, 2루수는 현재 같은 팀인 앨투나에서 쉘비 포드(Shelby Ford)가 있는 상황에서....

쉘비 포드의 수비 역시 그렇게 좋은 수준은 아니지만, 만약 포드가 유격수로 컨버젼한다면 자연스레 미래의 벅스 2루수가 될 겁니다.

I have a follow-up question to the recent mailbag question about Phil Dumatrait. You say he will be fully recovered from his surgery. Doesn't he have a history of other medical issues with his arm?
필립 두마트레이트(Phil Dumatrait)가 내년에 완치되어서 돌아올 거라고 했는데, 그는 예전에 팔부상 경력이 있지않나요?

Dumatrait did undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left elbow in 2004 and missed the entire season as a result. However, after that rehabilitation process, Dumatrait pitched healthy until shoulder issues shut him down this past season. He went on the disabled list in late June with rotator cuff tendinitis before undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery in August, ending his season for good.

04시즌에 타미 존 서저리를 했고, 그것 때문에 그 시즌 전체를 쉬었다고.

08시즌 8월에 관절경 수술을 하기 전에 6월에는 회전근 건염으로 DL에 올랐다고.

Because nothing was torn in his shoulder, the Pirates don't seem overly concerned about Dumatrait's ability to bounce back and fully recover. They're also optimistic because Dumatrait's injury this past season was not related to his surgically repaired elbow. If Dumatrait were to have a recurring problem with his elbow, that would be more of a concern.

You want percentages, huh? Well, here you go: Lowe -- two percent, Penny -- five percent, Byrd -- 55 percent, Schilling -- four percent. Byrd clearly seems to be the best fit among that group when you look at his age, results and salary demands in comparison to the Pirates' desires. However, one word of caution: It seems the list of teams jumping into the Byrd sweepstakes gets larger every day because of his affordability. That could make the Pirates' pursuit a bit harder.

There is almost no chance that Lowe would land in Pittsburgh, though I don't believe in attaching a zero percentage to anyone until they officially sign elsewhere -- unless their name is CC or Manny. Penny and Schilling are long shots given the interest both are likely to garner. The two are coming off injuries, which will always intrigue teams looking to get a bargain on a once-proven pitcher who might rebound. When you hear about players staying in Florida for extended Spring Training, it is typically in reference to a player who is recovering from an injury and rehabilitating. As it suggests, extended Spring Training follows the end of the regular Spring Training slate and allows players who are either not healthy enough to join the Major League club or on a Minor League team to have supervised workouts, exhibition games and simulated games. Players who will be assigned to short-season teams that begin in June also participate in extended Spring Training until those seasons open.

There are also games scheduled against players from other teams, though not every player participating in the instructional league plays in those games.
