Pirates' Alvarez ranked No. 1 in Eastern League
Baseball America yesterday named three Pirates minor league players among its top 15 prospects in the Class AA Eastern League, including Pedro Alvarez at No. 1.
Alvarez, who finished last season with the Altoona Curve by collecting 14 home runs, 55 RBIs and a .247 average, was selected by the magazine along with pitcher Brad Lincoln (No. 10) and outfielder Jose Tabata (No. 15) among the Eastern League's top 20 prospects. Alvarez, the second pick of the 2008 draft, finished his first professional season with 27 homers and 95 RBIs combined at Altoona and Class A Lynchburg, far and away the best totals in the Pirates' minor and major league system except for Garrett Jones Indianapolis/Pirates 33 homers and 94 RBIs.
The magazine earlier in the week named Alvarez No. 3 and infielder Chase D'Arnaud No. 13 among the top prospects in the Class A Carolina League, which D'Arnaud and Lynchburg won. It also had pitcher Rudy Owens No. 11 and '09 fourth-overall pick Tony Sanchez, a catcher, at No. 12 among South Atlantic prospects. Compensatory-round pick Victor Black, a pitcher, was ranked sixth in the New York-Penn League.
페드로 알바레스가 어제 BA가 선정한 더블 A 이스턴 리그(Eastern League)의 유망주 순위 1위를 차지했습니다. 벅스는 이외에도 10위의 브레드 린컨(Brad Lincoln)과 15위의 호세 타바타(Jose Tabata)가 선정되었습니다.
최근에는 드레프트되고서 빠른 콜업을 시키는데 알바레스도 계약문제가 일찍 끝났으면 올시즌 벅스에서 볼 수 있지 않았을까 싶네요.
일단 올해 린츠버그에서는 (다소) 삽질했지만, 앨투나로 승격되어서는 아주 좋은 모습을 보였고, 야구월드컵에서도 좋은 활약으로 미국이 금메달을 따는게 일조를 했죠.
현지시간으로 10월 6일날 발표된 싱글 A 케롤라이나 리그에서는 3위에 알바레스와 13위에 체이스 디 아르노(Chase D'Arnaud)가 선정되었습니다.
To be eligible for a league's list, a pitcher must have thrown 1/3 inning for each team game or have made 20 appearances (10 in short-season and rookie-level leagues). Hitters need one plate appearance for each team game.
BA의 유망주 랭킹은 해당리그에서 BA기준에 맞춘 조건만 성립되면 유망주리스트에 올라가니 두 개의 레벨에 동시에 올라가는 경우도 흔하죠. 위에 원문은 BA가 선정한 기준입니다. 기준이 아주 미미하죠. 기준표(?)는 별 의미를 두지않는게 편할 겁니다. BA는 전통적으로 나이와 툴을 중시하는 곳이기 때문이죠.

In yet another edition of The Future Is Coming, The Future Is Coming, the franchise with the advanced-Class A champion in Lynchburg also has three of the Top 15 prospects in Class AA's Eastern League according to Baseball America today -- and Pedro Alvarez is No. 1.

The Eastern League MVP (Carlos Santana of Akron), the son of a member of the last bunch of Pirates winners (Reading's Kyle Drabek, Doug's boy) and the next-great Giants pitcher (Madison Bumgarner) all were ranked by the sport's prospect bible as less than promising than Alvarez. Although, as
BA's John Manuel wrote in a story posted today, Bowie left-hander Brian Matusz, who went 5-3 with parent-club Baltimore including victories in his final three starts with a 2.57 ERA, would've finished No. 1 except that on his way through the EL to the bigs he fell one inning short of the magazine's criteria of 20 appearances.

BA's summation of Alvarez, only for registered subscribers, begins thusly : "Alvarez had an eventful calendar year, signing late last September. . ., [starting] slowly at high Class A Lynchburg, striking out in 25 percent of his at-bats." It quotes one anonymous manager as citing this third baseman's "serious raw power" and others referring to his "plus arm" and deft hands, making up for his "modest range and agility." Portland manager Arnie Beyelor called him "a monster. He reminded me a little bit of [Boston's Kevin] Youkilis in that he's a better athlete than he looks." Alvarez hit .333 with 13 home runs, 40 RBIs, 34 walks, 59 strikeouts and a .590 slugging percentage in 222 EL at-bats.

* Of No. 10 Brad Lincoln, Alvarez's teammate and the gold-winning pitcher on the World Cup champion USA club, BA noted: "Lincoln threw more strikes this year and stood out with command of a fastball that touched 95 mph and sat at 90-93 mph." It also mentioned his fastball and curveball caused swings and misses with late movement, and his changeup has made improvement as a third pitch. Lincoln went 1-5 in 13 starts, but crafted a 2.28 ERA and allowed batters just a .228 average before he ascended to Class AAA. There, with Indianapolis, he went 6-2 with a 4.70 ERA, but 42 strikeouts against 10 walks in 61 1/3 innings.

Despite being traded, having his effort publicly questioned and going through the arrest last spring of his wife on charges of child abduction, among others, this outfielder has continued to carry "impressive tools" such as an "above-average bat" and a "strong arm." The question with Tabata : power. He had two homers in 228 at-bats with Altoona, three more in 134 at-bats with Class AAA Indianapolis -- where his .276 batting average was a slight dip from his .303 with the Curve. He compiled 22 doubles in 362 total at-bats.
15위에 선정된 타바타는 작년 양키스에서 트레이드 된 이후 올시즌 초에 안 좋은 기억으로 정신적인 충격이 있었습니다. 하지만 사건이 해결되어 그의 플레이가 편안해졌고, 나름 좋은 시즌을 보냈습니다. 그는 평균이상의 타격과 강한 어깨를 보유하고 있지만 파워가 부족하다는 단점이 있는데 올해 앨투나 228타석동안 2개의 홈런밖에 뽑아내질 못했고, 승격되어서는 134타수동안 3개를 쳤습니다. 올시즌 통틀어 362타석동안 2루타는 22개. 타바타도 내년에 벅스에서 시즌을 시작할 확률이 높아졌습니다.

Interesting to note, BA looked back five years. . . when the Mets' David Wright was their No. 1 EL prospect, the Giants' Matt Cain was No. 3 and No. 6 -- just ahead of Detroit's Curtis Granderson and Philadelphia's Ryan Howard -- was Zach Duke.
저는 이게 가장 흥미롭네요. 5년전 BA랭킹에서 당시 이스턴 리그 1위가 메츠의 데이빗 라이트였고, 3위가 SF의 맷 케인이었는데 6위가 잭 듀크였네요. 당시 듀크가 디트로이트의 커티스 그랜더슨과 필리스의 라이언 하워드보다 더 높은 순위였다고 합니다. 제가 그랜더슨의 나이는 잘 모르겠으나 BA특성상 하워드는 충분히 그럴수 있었다는 생각이 드네요. 앞에 말했지만 나이를 (엄청) 중시하는 곳이 BA인지라....
P.S. 써놓고 보니 이게 BA 선수 스카우팅 리포터가 아니군요. 그냥 선수 소갯글 같습니다.
