The Orioles remain interested in highly touted Dominican shortstop Miguel Angel Sano, but they're not currently prepared to meet his asking price.

Sano, a 16-year-old who is considered one of the prizes of the international free agent market, is believed to be seeking between $5.5 and $7 million. The Orioles have worked Sano out at their Dominican baseball complex on several occasions, though they've yet to make an offer to his agent, Rob Plummer.

"The agent has officially begun the process of negotiating with several clubs and we have not made an offer," said Orioles international scouting director John Stockstill, who wouldn't comment when asked how much money Sano is seeking. "The current asking price is north of where we currently have an interest in going."

Stockstill did say that the club has been in regular contact with Plummer, who did not return calls for this story. The Orioles have done extensive homework on Sano and decided internally what they believe the player is worth.

Major League Baseball launched an investigation into the age and identity of Sano in June. The investigation has confirmed his identity, but the study of his age remains inconclusive, which has delayed his signing. Teams, including the Orioles, are concerned that if age discrepancies are found, Sano may have trouble getting into the country and joining an organization.
일단 가장 최근의 소식이 사무국으로부터 인증(?)받은 자신의 나이에 관한 검사를 통과했다는 것인데, 단지 남아 있는 것이 있다면 그 나이가 산노라는 것을 입증하는데는 여전히 시간이 남았다는군요. 해서 산노측 에이전트도 팀들과의 협상에서 진전이 없는 상황이죠.

Stockstill said the ongoing investigation is a factor in the club's pursuit of Sano, however, it's "only one factor of many in our considerations."

Asked today where the Orioles were at in regard to Sano, president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said : "I don't see anything happening on the immediate horizon."
일단 볼티모어측은 이런 관심에 대해 여러 고려대상중에 한 가지일뿐이라고 축소하며 앤디 멕파일(Andy MacPhail) 단장도 별거아니라는 식으로 말했다.

돈이 너무 많이 올랐군요. 벅스가 처음 3M이 안되는 금액을 제시했던 것으로 기억하는데, 그 이후 그 어떤 구단도 공식적인(formal) 오퍼를 했다는 기사를 본 적이 없는지라....
일단 산노측도 자신의 나이에 대해 거의 100%에 가깝게 확신하기때문이 아닐까 싶은 생각도 듭니다.

Looking for a veteran bat to help their playoff push, the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a deal with Jason Giambi, according to multiple reports.

Giambi was released by the Oakland Athletics earlier this month after hitting just .193 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs in 83 games. He reportedly will join Triple-A Colorado Springs to get at-bats and then report to the Rockies on Sept. 1 when rosters are expanded.

"Jason is 100 percent healthy and definitely plans to continue playing," his agent Arn Tellem said in an e-mail to The Associated Press when Giambi was released. "He is confident he'll be able to contribute to a team down the stretch."

Giambi had been on the disabled list since July 20 with a strained right quadriceps muscle when he was released by Oakland.

The 38-year-old first baseman and designated hitter had returned to Oakland this season after seven pressure-packed years with the New York Yankees, agreeing in January to a one-year contract that guaranteed him $5.25 million.
콜로라도 록키스가 얼마전 방출된 제이슨 지암비(Jason Giambi)와 계약했습니다. 이 달초에 에이스가 방출했기때문에 록스는 지암비에게 빅리그 최소 금액인 40만달러(중에서도 남은 기간에 비례하면 실질적으로 10만달러도 안됩니다)로 계약을 했습니다.

일단 오랫동안 경기에 뛰지 않았기때문에 록스는 그를 트리플 A팀인 콜로라도 스프링스로 보냈습니다. 지암비가 플옵 로스터(물론 록스가 플옵진출해야하겠지만...)에 오르기 위해서는 8월 31일 이전에 빅리그 로스터에 포함되어야하는데, 리포터에 따르면 40인로스터가 확장되는 9월에 올린다고 하는군요. 아마 9월 한 달동안을 위해 쓰일 모양입니다.

DL에 있을때 방출되었지만 지금의 건강은 아주 좋다고 하는군요. 지암비가 옛날의 지암비가 아닐지라도 타자친화적인 쿠어스필드에서 뛴다면 분명 힘이 되어줄거 같습니다.

The Rockies will announce on Sunday the signing of veteran right-hander Russ Ortiz to a Minor League contract, and they're close to signing slugger Jason Giambi to a Minor League deal, a baseball official confirmed Saturday night.

The two would represent veteran reinforcements for Colorado down the stretch run.

Ortiz, 35, went 3-6 with a 5.57 ERA in 23 games, including 13 starts, with the Astros before being released. He signed a Minor league deal with the Yankees but opted out after going 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA without being promoted to the Majors.

The signings would come before the Sept. 1 date to expand the rosters to 40. More importantly, with the Rockies leading the National League Wild Card race by two games after Saturday's 14-11 win over the Giants, Ortiz is in the organization well before the Aug. 31 deadline for players to be eligible for the postseason roster.

The need for help grew Saturday, when the Rockies placed right-hander Aaron Cook (10-6) on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder soreness and, under a hopeful preliminary diagnosis, could lose him for more than three weeks.

Ortiz has succeeded with strong teams in the past. He won 67 games for the Giants from 1998-2002 and went 21-7 with the Braves in 2003. But injuries have plagued Ortiz in recent years. He missed all of last season after undergoing right elbow surgery.

If the Rockies complete an agreement with Giambi, as expected, he could represent a left-handed power bat off the bench during the stretch. The Athletics released Giambi after he batted .193 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs in 58 games. He is a career .282 hitter with 407 home runs.
지암비의 계약과 함께 록스는 7월말에 휴스턴에서 방출된 러스 오티즈(Russ Ortiz)와 마이너계약을 했습니다. 오티즈도 지암비와 마찬가지로 8월 31일 이전에 빅리그 로스터에 포함되어야만 플옵에 뛸 수있는 자격이 있습니다. 오티즈는 휴스턴에서 방출된 후 양키스 마이너에서 나름 괜찮았지만 플옵 컨텍더팀에서 뛰고 싶은 마음에 옵트조항을 실행했다는군요. 아무래도 양키스에서 뛸 수있는 확률이 상대적으로 낮기때문이 아닐까 싶습니다.

오티즈는 일단 어제 DL로 간 아론 쿡(Aaron Cook)의 자리를 위해 영입한 거 같습니다. 쿡은 3주 이상 결장할거라고 하는군요. 지금이 8월말인데 쿡이 완벽한 컨디션으로 돌아올려면 시즌이 끝나겠군요.

오티즈가 옵트조항으로 스스로 방출된 시점이 8월 17일이니까 오티즈 역시 몸을 만들어야하기때문에 록스가 마이너계약을 한거 같습니다. 일단 오늘 파디야처럼 마이너리헵을 할 것으로 예상되고 방출되기 전날에 4이닝 투구를 했기때문에 파디야만큼의 긴 갭은 아니네요.

내일 경기는 호머 베일리(Homer Bailey)가 선발로 등판하는데, 저번에 린스컴과의 맞대결에서 타선이 린스컴격파를 앞두고 자신이 무너졌습니다. 확실히 베일리는 공만 빠르다는 생각밖에 안드네요. 공이 빠르다면 충분히 자신의 커맨드로 타자를 앞도하고 게임을 리딩할 줄알아야하는데 그런게 전혀안되죠.

그냥 내일 벅스의 시즌최다인 6연승에 재물이 되길....

Cedeno out until Tuesday

Shortstop Ronny Cedeno has a hairline fracture in his right pinky, but he should miss no more than the games last night and today.

Cedeno was hurt Friday when a Micah Owings bouncer jammed him on the throwing hand. He stayed in the game, but the finger swelled yesterday, and X-rays revealed a tiny fracture on the tip.

Manager John Russell said that, because it was in the tip rather than a joint, it will be no more than a matter of waiting for pain and swelling to subside. Cedeno could return Tuesday.

There remains no timetable for pitcher Jose Ascanio (shoulder) to resume throwing. If he does not do so soon, he probably will not pitch again this season.
아스카니오(Jose Ascanio)가 얼마전 어깨건염으로 DL로 갔는데 아직 언제 피칭을 제계할지 결정하지 않았다고 합니다. 이제 시즌이 6주도 남지않았기에 무리할 필요는 없어보이는군요.

밀리지가 빅리그로 콜업되면서 조직내 마이너에 있는 CF유망주들의 배치와 교통정리가 원활해졌고, 밀리지의 콜업 후 호세 타바타(Jose Tabata)가 인디애나폴리스로 콜업되었는데, 잘때려주고 있습니다.
개인적으로 내년에 수비가 어설픈 가렛 존슨을 1루로 고정하고 밀리지(LF)-맥커첸(CF)-타바타(RF)로 갔으면 좋겠네요.
