하와이 윈터리그 결산

좀 늦은감이 있지만, 이번 하와이 윈터리그에는 벅스 선수들을 총 7명을 보냈습니다.

벅스 선수들이 소속되었던 팀은 웨스트 오하우 케인파이어스(West Oahu CaneFires)입니다. 양 디비전 최고 승률팀끼리 맞붙는 최종전까지 갔지만, 아쉽게(?) 와이키키 비치보이스(Waikiki BeachBays)에게 졌습니다.

헤리슨 비숍(Harrison Bishop)

05년에 볼티모어 40라운드(전체 1202번)으로 지명되었지만, 대학교로 진학하고 07년에 벅스에 의해 17라운드(전체 518번)으로 지명되었습니다.

대학교때부터 줄곧 릴리프로 뛰어왔기 왔습니다. 대충 1, 2이닝을 소화하는 투수입니다.

비숍은 일단 피안타율을 줄여야만 더 높은 곳으로 올라갈 수 있다고 생각됩니다. 릴리프인 투수가 이닝당 하나씩의 안타를 맞는다면 투수코치나 감독들에게 신뢰가 가지 않을테니 말이죠. 안타의 가치랄까요? 주자 없는 상황보다 주자가 있을시, 특히 스코어링 포지션이 주자가 있을때, 유독 피안타율이 높네요. 이건 확실히 불안요소입니다.

카일 블롬(Kyle Bloom)

이번 HWB에서 올타임 HWB에 투수부분에 상을 받았습니다. 올해의 투수상은 따로 있구요.

대학때는 완투경험도 있지만, 아무래도 마이너에서는 선수(특히 투수) 보호차원에게 길게 한 번에 많은 이닝을 소화시키게 하진 않죠.

근대 이 선수를 왜 40인로스터에 포함시키지 않았는지 모르겠네요. 일단 BA에서는 이번 룰 5 드레프트에서 괜찮은 좌완 투수로 선정되기도 했습니다. 이 말인 즉슨, 빼앗길수도 있다는 말이죠.

뭐 보시면 아시겠지만, 솔리드합니다. 사진에는 나타나지 않았지만, 올시즌 앨투나에서 GF가 2개나 됩니다. 이 GF는 Game Finish의 약자로 타이트한 상황에서 경기를 마무리 지은 걸 말하죠. 마무리투수로 말한다면 터프세이브 정도 됩니다. 이건 선발투수가 마지막까지 집중력이 있고, 위기상황에서 대처능력이 탁월했다는 걸 보여주죠. 이런 선수를 40인 로스터에 포함시키지 않다니....왠지 헌팅턴이 또 실수한듯.

에릭 크레브스(Eric Krebs)

전혀 발전이 없는 선수입니다. 패스!

모이세스 로블레스(Moises Robles)

84년 4월생이 올해 AA 앤투나에서 이닝보다 10개가 더 많은 피안타를 기록한 릴리프. 포기.

마일스 듀햄(Miles Durham)

1루수겸 외야수입니다. 히코리(Hickory)에서 잘한다잘한다해서 린츠버그(Lynchburg)로 올렸더니 삽질했습니다. HWB에서는 그나마 다시 리바운딩한 모습을 보였습니다. 하와이 윈터리그가 투수리그이다보니 이 정도 성적도 괜찮다고 봅니다만 나이가 25살이군요.

개인적으로 타자유망주를 평가하는 기준은 BB/SO인데 많이 개선해야 상위레벨로 올라갈듯 합니다. 수비쪽에서는 1루수보다 외야수의 가치가 더 높아보입니다. 수비스텟을 사실 크게 믿지는 않지만, 일단 히코리에서 600번의 수비기회에서는 어시스트가 35개, 린츠버그에서 95번의 수비기회에서는 6개의 어시스트 등으로 볼때 괜찮은거 같지만 나이가 좀 많군요.

브라이언 프라이데이(Brian Friday)

HWB에서는 망했지만, 여전히 출루율을 좋군요. 1 : 1에 육박하는 BB/SO비율은 22살의 상위 싱글A선수에게 관심을 갇게 합니다. 아직 어린 나이이고, 파워라는 측면은 가장 늦게 발전하기 때문에 크게 걱정하진 않습니다. 홈런은 아직 거의 나오지 않지만 2루타 수치를 보면 그 2루타의 대부분이 나중에 경험과 근육이 생기면서 홈런으로 바뀔 가능성이 높습니다.

짐 리그린츠?(Jim Negrych)(주 - 발음을 어케 하는지 모르겠네요)

올해의 피츠버그 마이너 선수에 선정되었습니다. 뭐 당연한 선택입니다. 일단 이번 하와이 윈터리그에 출전한 벅스 선수중에 가장 전도유망한 선수입니다. 타격하나는 좋죠. 단지(?) 수비가 문제입니다. 현재는 2루수로 뛰고 있지만, 아마 3루수로 컨버전을 힘들 겁니다. 상위레벨에 닐 워커와 올해 드레프트된 알바레스가 있기 때문이죠.

또한, 2루수는 현재 같은 팀인 앨투나에서 쉘비 포드(Shelby Ford)가 있는 상황에서....

쉘비 포드의 수비 역시 그렇게 좋은 수준은 아니지만, 만약 포드가 유격수로 컨버젼한다면 자연스레 미래의 벅스 2루수가 될 겁니다.

I have a follow-up question to the recent mailbag question about Phil Dumatrait. You say he will be fully recovered from his surgery. Doesn't he have a history of other medical issues with his arm?
필립 두마트레이트(Phil Dumatrait)가 내년에 완치되어서 돌아올 거라고 했는데, 그는 예전에 팔부상 경력이 있지않나요?

Dumatrait did undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left elbow in 2004 and missed the entire season as a result. However, after that rehabilitation process, Dumatrait pitched healthy until shoulder issues shut him down this past season. He went on the disabled list in late June with rotator cuff tendinitis before undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery in August, ending his season for good.

04시즌에 타미 존 서저리를 했고, 그것 때문에 그 시즌 전체를 쉬었다고.

08시즌 8월에 관절경 수술을 하기 전에 6월에는 회전근 건염으로 DL에 올랐다고.

Because nothing was torn in his shoulder, the Pirates don't seem overly concerned about Dumatrait's ability to bounce back and fully recover. They're also optimistic because Dumatrait's injury this past season was not related to his surgically repaired elbow. If Dumatrait were to have a recurring problem with his elbow, that would be more of a concern.

하지만 벅스는 그의 부상이 예전에 수술한 것과는 무관하기에 긍정적이라고.

You want percentages, huh? Well, here you go: Lowe -- two percent, Penny -- five percent, Byrd -- 55 percent, Schilling -- four percent. Byrd clearly seems to be the best fit among that group when you look at his age, results and salary demands in comparison to the Pirates' desires. However, one word of caution: It seems the list of teams jumping into the Byrd sweepstakes gets larger every day because of his affordability. That could make the Pirates' pursuit a bit harder.

이들의 나이와 벅스가 지급할 수준이 되는 연봉 등을 따져봤을때, 버드가 제격이라고.

There is almost no chance that Lowe would land in Pittsburgh, though I don't believe in attaching a zero percentage to anyone until they officially sign elsewhere -- unless their name is CC or Manny. Penny and Schilling are long shots given the interest both are likely to garner. The two are coming off injuries, which will always intrigue teams looking to get a bargain on a once-proven pitcher who might rebound. And remember, Schilling will not be able to return until midseason.

그렇지만, 로우는 절대로 벅스와 계약안 할거라고. 거의 0%에 가깝다고 하네요.

페니나 쉴링과 같은 투수와 계약하는 것은 위험천만한 짓이라고...뭐 이유는 다들 아실테고.

As for Tazawa, the chances, too, are slim-to-none. The Pirates weren't alone in scouting Tazawa, and the problem is going to be outbidding other clubs -- believed to include the Red Sox, Mariners, Braves, Cubs and Marlins. The Red Sox reportedly just made Tazawa a $6 million offer.

타자와와 계약할 확률은 거의 조금이거나 아주 없다라네요. 동의합니다.

With the infusion of many young prospects into the organization, I've become an active follower of the fall and winter leagues. I noticed that Shelby Ford has not been playing. What is his status?
가을 & 겨울리그의 신봉자라고... 근대 왜 쉘비 포드(Shelby Ford)는 AFL에서 플레이하지 않냐고?

Ford was shut down halfway through the Arizona Fall League season after sustaining a fracture on the tip of his right middle finger. There shouldn't be any issues with the injury going into next season. Ford hit .294 in 18 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions. He finished with two doubles, two triples, three home runs, 11 RBIs and four stolen bases.

포드는 오른쪽 손 손가락에 부상을 당해서 AFL을 중도하차했지만, 크게 걱정할 부상은 아니리고. 그담은 포드가 AFL에서 거둔 성적.

포드가 이런 식으로 계속 성장해간다면 내년 미드시즌쯤에는 벅스에서 볼 수 있지않을까 싶네요. 물론 선결과제는 잭 윌슨의 트레이드

Well, you can start with the obvious, which would include those players who joined the club as September callups or for brief stints during the season. In that group you have guys such as Jesse Chavez, Romulo Sanchez, Nyjer Morgan, Steve Pearce, Luis Cruz and Ross Ohlendorf.

In addition to the pitchers on that list who have already had a taste of the Majors, I think you'd have to assume that Daniel McCutchen will get a chance with the Pirates before the season ends. Then you have Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker, who may not be with Pittsburgh on Opening Day, but both should make their Major League debuts in '09.

Will the Pirates be shopping Zach Duke, considering his struggles last year, or does the team think he can rebound?

I don't anticipate the Pirates actively shopping Duke, because it's hard to believe that another club would be interested in giving up a good package for him. The results from the left-hander over the past three seasons have not been impressive, which, conversely, has dropped his value.

I have no idea라네요. 하지만, 다른 구단들이 그에 대한 관심이 점점 줄어들고 있다고.

3년전 데뷔해서 점점 인상적이지 않았다고, 다시 말해서 그의 가치는 날로 떨어진다고.

It would be more advantageous for the Pirates to see if new pitching coach Joe Kerrigan can help Duke regain his rookie form. From there, management could then move forward with Duke as part of the rotation, or net more for him if they decided to deal him.

하지만, 새로 영입한 조 케리건에 의해 그는 루키시즌의 그로 리바운드 될 수도 있다고.

Could you explain exactly what goes on in extended Spring Training? Could you also provide the same information for the fall instructional league?

When you hear about players staying in Florida for extended Spring Training, it is typically in reference to a player who is recovering from an injury and rehabilitating. As it suggests, extended Spring Training follows the end of the regular Spring Training slate and allows players who are either not healthy enough to join the Major League club or on a Minor League team to have supervised workouts, exhibition games and simulated games. Players who will be assigned to short-season teams that begin in June also participate in extended Spring Training until those seasons open.

플로리다의 확장 스캠에서 어떤 선수가 플레이한다는 정보를 입수했다면 그건 백이면 백  리헵(rehab)이라고.

원래 스캠기간이 끝난 후 건강하지 못한 메이저 and 마이너 선수들이 모여서 연습게임이나 시뮬레이션 게임을 한다고.

Players in extended Spring Training with the Pirates will play exhibition games against other clubs with Spring Training facilities near Bradenton, Fla. However, these games are very loosely structured, don't count in any sort of standings and take place on practice fields.

아마도 벅스 선수들은 브레이든턴 근처의 스캠시설에서 다른 클럽팀들과 연습게임을 할 거라고. 하지만, 이런 연습게임은 루즈해서 재미도 없고, 순위선정도 없고, 연습 필드에서 펼쳐진다고.

As for the fall instructional league, it lasts about a month, beginning in mid-September. The Pirates split their instructional league period into two phases. For two weeks, there was a developmental phase where players who had been in the organization for at least a year came to be supervised in workouts. Much of the work done was to develop strength and conditioning plans for players to follow during the offseason. There are also games scheduled against players from other teams, though not every player participating in the instructional league plays in those games.

The Pirates then had a two-week indoctrination instructional league period where this year's Draft picks and players from Latin American teams participated. Again, the goal is to see at what stage of development these players are at, give them offseason training goals and allow them to participate in supervised games.

라틴 아메리카 팀에 소속되었던 선수와 올해 픽되었던 선수들은 2주 동안 주입 교육리그에서 플레이 한다고.

The Pirates today hired

The Pirates today hired Keith Champion as a special assistant to general manager Neal Huntington.

Champion, 49, worked the past two seasons as a pro scout for the Boston Red Sox. He was an advance scout (1995-99) and special assistant to the GM (200-06) for the Chicago Cubs and also managed three seasons in the San Diego Padres’ minor league system.

Champion spent 10 years in the St. Louis Cardinals’ farm system as a player (1982-84), coach (1985-87) and manager (1988-91).

최근 두 시즌동안은 보스턴의 스카우트로 활동했다고 하네요.

Before getting to your questions, I must first play messenger. I was taking some personal vacation time last Tuesday when an e-mail showed up on my Blackberry from former Pirates reliever Salomon Torres.

It was certainly a surprise to hear from Torres, especially considering he had announced his retirement just hours before. But Torres had a specific reason for e-mailing me, and he asked me to pass along a message to Pirates fans. Here is that message:

How can the Pirates expect to move forward without veteran players such as Doug Mientkiewicz? I'm not saying replace Adam LaRoche with him, but he doesn't seem to be a bad player to have on the roster and is good leader. So, to really get to my question: Does Doug have a future in Pittsburgh or not?

Pirates management is hopeful that Mientkiewicz has a future in Pittsburgh. The Bucs are ready to make an offer, but the question remains whether it will be enough to keep Mientkiewicz from signing with another team with which he could have the possibility of earning a starting spot. That's something that Mientkiewicz is looking into right now.

일단 벅스는 민케비치와 내년에도 함께 하고 싶어해요. 벅스는 이미 민케비치에서 오퍼를 했지만, 아직 답변이 없습니다. 민케비치는 그의 플레잉타임을 늘리고 싶어해요. 그게 어떤 팀이 되었건 말이죠. 그러한 것들이 민케비치가 찾고 있는 거죠.

One thing is for certain: Whether Mientkiewicz does return to Pittsburgh (and I'd set those odds at less than 50 percent), the Pirates certainly took note of his leadership and will want someone who can bring that same intensity and veteran presence on the team.

한 가지 확실한 건 민케비치가 다시 벅스로 복귀하든 안하든 벅스는 확실히 그의 리더쉽을 알았고 그가 다시 오지않는다면 올시즌 그가 보여주었던 강한 리더십을 가진 누군가를 영입할 겁니다. 하지만, 제가 봤을땐 그가 다시 돌아올 확률은 50%이하입니다.

Do you think the Pirates should take a chance on someone such as Brad Penny? He had a down year with some injuries, but he could end up as a bargain.
벅스가 브래드 페니와 같은 선수에게 오퍼를 할까요? 그는 부상으로 추락했지만 싼 가격에 영입할 수 있을 거 같은데요?

The Pirates are certainly going to make a run at landing a veteran starter and one that they can sign for a reasonable sum. That takes the Bucs out of the running for your top-tier free-agent types. But you look at a guy such as Penny, and you see a pitcher who will likely seek out a short-term deal and will not need to be offered a high-dollar figure because of a down year last season. It's definitely a risk to sign a pitcher coming off shoulder problems, but there surely could be a nice reward if the former Los Angeles starter regains his form.

벅스는 확실히 베테랑 선발투수를 구해야하고 그건 합리적인 가격이 되어야 합니다. 결국 그건 벅스의 쇼핑리스트에는 탑FA는 없다는 거죠. 그렇지만 당신이 관찰했던 페니와 같은 투수는 짧은 계약을 원하고 많은 돈을 투자하지 않아도 될 투수였을 겁니다. 하지만, 어깨부상을 당했던 투수와 계약을 한다는 것은 확실히 위험한 행동입니다만 페니가 그의 팔이 다시 정상으로 된다면 그건 대박이죠.

There are a number of players that could fit in this "Penny" category, so to speak: Mike Hampton, Curt Schilling, Mark Prior ... and the list goes on. In other words, if the Pirates want to take a gamble on a pitcher who has once been among the league's best but endured injuries in '08, the options will be there. And I would not be surprised if the Pirates do, in fact, go down that path.

페니와 비슷한 카테고리의 투수들은 많아요. 예를들어 마이크 햄튼, 컷 쉴링, 마크 프라이스 등등. 다시 말해서 벅스가 그런 투수에게 갬블을 한다해도 저는 크게 놀라지 않을 겁니다.

즉, 적은 연봉에 많은 옵션이 들어있는 단기간의 계약으로 잭팟을 터트리는 계약을 벅스는 할 수 있다는 얘기. 이건 이미 올시즌 초에 프라이스와 계약한 파즈, 제닝스와 계약한 텍사스를 생각하시면 이해하기 쉬울듯.

If the Pirates want to go after more of a safe veteran pitcher, Paul Byrd has been rumored as a viable possibility. He'd be a fine fit in the back half of the rotation and would not demand a hefty salary.
만약 벅스가 더 안전한 베테랑 선발투수를 구하려한다면 폴 버드(Paul Byrd)와 같은 투수가 있겠네요. 그는 많은 돈이 들지 않을겁니다.(탑 FA 투수와 비교해서 말이죠.)

With the Yankees not picking up the option on reliever Damaso Marte, what are the chances the Pirates could get him back, at a decent price?

Marte ended up signing with the Yankees anyway, but since I kept getting this question after the signing took place, I figured I would still address it in this forum in case some of you missed that news. To begin with, management is not yet ready to give up on Brian Bixler. Those of us who watched Bixler this season saw few signs that he would be ready to take over as the team's everyday shortstop in the near future. His defense was average, and, quite frankly, he looked overmatched on offense. Pirates management, however, still considers him a legitimate option for next season.

Ownership and management is certainly not proud of the fact that the organization has had 16 consecutive losing seasons, but they are not looking to take ownership of each of those 16 years. You look at the current management team, and it's more accurate to say it has endured one losing season. Same with ownership, which underwent a change prior to the '08 season. Attaching what happened in 1993 with a group of people who were not with the organization doesn't make sense.

구단주와 벅스는 그 기록을 부끄러워 하고 있답니다. 하지만 어떤 조치도 취하고 있지 않고 있습니다.

That said, this new core is certainly keen on getting things turned around under their watch. They want to be competitive next year. But they aren't looking to allow a losing streak to dictate how they assemble a team for next season. If it takes one more subpar season for the Pirates to be built for long-term success, management is OK with that.
