Spring Postcard : Pittsburgh could surprise with young talent

Three observations

1) El Toro is stealing the show.

The kid is Pedro Alvarez -- the No. 2 pick in the 2008 draft -- and while he may not take a swing at PNC Park in 2009, he was all the buzz in Pirate City.


"It's hard not to love what you see," GM Neal Huntington said one morning, with the big smile of a guy who'd just taken a new set of wheels out for a spin. "Tremendous upside. It's been 10 months since he last played a competitive game, but we're already seeing it. You hear [first base coach] Perry Hill talk about how he likes the foundation of what he does defensively as a third baseman; you hear [hitting coach] Don Long talk about how he's got an advanced approach as a hitter; you hear Manny Sanguillen drop the Willie Stargell comparison. He's still 22 and got a long ways to go, but the ceiling, we're certainly seeing it. We're very pleased with his progress."

Listed at 6-foot-3, 233 pounds -- his teammates at Vanderbilt called him "El Toro" (The Bull) -- Alvarez, to the delight of the Pirates, reported to camp slimmed down after his conditioning was questioned this winter. Watch Alvarez take his cuts in person, and you immediately see his offensive skills: the scary bat speed that allows him to rip balls to all fields; the quick hands that permit him to let the ball go deep into the strike zone; the professional approach at the plate that allows him to consistently make solid contact. Scouts and coaches wonder if Alvarez ultimately will stay at third. He possesses a good arm, but has average range and agility. Regardless, whether it's at third or in the outfield, Alvarez will be a premier No. 3 hitter and the face of the Pirates for years to come. As for his arrival in The Show? Interestingly enough, Pirates manager John Russell hasn't ruled out the possibility that he will be starring at PNC Park this summer. Stayed tuned.

The three keys to the Pirates' season, according to Wilson: "Pitching, pitching and pitching." Last season the Pirates were dead last in the NL in team ERA (5.08), batting average against (.286) and walks (657). Enter new pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, Pittsburgh's fourth in five years. At his last stop in Philly, Kerrigan was criticized at times for being too hands-off with his pitchers; with this young Pirates staff, he's been anything but. By the second day of camp, Kerrigan had already crouched behind the plate and caught for over half of the 28 hurlers in camp. After watching film of the 2008 staff and concluding that hurlers didn't pitch inside enough, he's installed dummy hitters at the plate for his pitchers' side sessions.

Much has been made about the Pirates' run of 16 straight losing seasons. Given that this is virtually the same team that went 17-37 after the Jason Bay and Xavier Nady deals at the trade deadline and finished with its fourth consecutive 90-loss season, a 17th appears inevitable. Not so fast. Good-luck charm Eric Hinske is here. Hinske was on the '07 Red Sox and the '08 Rays, so a World Series berth for the Steel City must not be far off, right? Hinske says he feels the same kind of vibe in the Bucs clubhouse he felt a year ago in Rays camp. "In Tampa, a lot of the young guys just hadn't figured it out," he says. "Once some guys started to, it was contagious. I think the same thing can happen here. There's a lot of talent here, too, that just hasn't come out."

The Pirates did take the Rays' run to heart. "They were able to go out there and do it and Detroit did it a couple years ago when they went to the World Series," says Wilson, who has played for eight of the Pirates' losing teams. "It makes you think that it can happen for anybody. You keep that in your thoughts. They're where you want to get to."

Said Huntington, "Anytime you see a team go from 90-plus losses to 90-plus wins, it gives you hope. It gives you reasons for optimism. You look at the Twins and they lose Johan Santana and Torii Hunter and brought in some young players and really built around their core. Projected to win somewhere in the low 70s, they won in the upper 80s and played a meaningful game one day after the season ended last year."

Prospect creating a buzz

One day after workouts, Russell was talking about -- who else? -- The Phenom, Alvarez, when he suddenly changed the subject. "You know, you should watch [Jose] Tabata hit," he replied. "Jose Tabata is kind of going under the radar here, but this kid has a special bat as well."

Indeed, Tabata's been under Alvarez's shadow, but he's shown that he will be a big part of the Pirates future, as well. Tabata -- acquired in July in the Nady trade with the Yankees -- is expected to start the season at Class AA Altoona to start the season, but he'll get at-bats at Class AAA Indianapolis and may even take a few cuts in Pittsburgh late this year. Tabata earned a bad reputation in the Yankees organization after leaving a game early at Class AA Trenton, but the Pirates have liked Tabata's quiet attitude thus far. The Pirates have also liked what they've seen on the field this spring -- he has big gap power that they think ultimately will turn into home run power.

Fantasy fodder

If you haven't noticed, Ryan Doumit has quietly emerged as a top fantasy catcher. At 28, Doumit is entering his prime and showed remarkable consistency last year -- there wasn't a month that he hit below .290. Last spring, Doumit -- a former outfielder and first baseman -- didn't even bring his catcher's mitt to camp, but then he took the starting job from Ronny Paulino. His .318 batting average would have ranked fourth in the league, but he was 37 plate appearances short of qualifying. Doumit won't fall short this year. Coaches in Pirates camp think he's primed for a big year. While he won't have any eye-popping RBI totals in the Pirates lineup, he's a decent bet to hit over .300 with close to 20 home runs.

1) Pedro Alvarez, 3B, Grade A- : 모두가 예상한대로의 모습을 보여준다면, 계약당시에 보라스와 함께 한 짓을 벅스팬들은 잊어버릴 것이다. 그가 건강하고, 스트라익존을 좁힌다면 그는 슈퍼스타로써의 행보를 걸을 것이다.

2) Andrew McCutchen, OF, Grade B+ : 그에게서 파워는 여전히 실망스럽고, 루상에서 주자의 모습은 더  나아져야 한다. 하지만, 수비와 타석에서의 참을성을 좋아졌다. 아직 어리기 때문에(86년 10월생), A-등급까지 도달할 수 있을 것이다.
그 전에 메이저리그에 갈거 같은데...ㅎ 

3) Jose Tabata, OF, Grade B+ : 난 사람들이 타바타에 대해 편견을 가지고 있는 것을 알고 있다. 하지만, 그는 아직 젊어서 그렇고, 일반적인 미국인이었다면, 고등학교를 졸업한지 고작 1년밖에 지나지 않은 선수였을 것이다. 만약 07년도에 드레프트되어서 08시즌 더블A 22경기에서 348-402-562 를 찍었다면, 사람들은 그를 경배했을 것이다.

4) Bryan Morris, RHP, Grade B- : 토미 존 서저리 이후 괜찮은 1년을 보냈기에 난 모리스에게 이 등급을 줬다.
모리스의 경우는 피츠버그로 넘어와서는 삽질(물론 부상때문이지만) 했지만, 08시즌 도합 20경기 등판에 3.47ERA 의 모습을 보여줬습니다. 현재는 다리쪽에 부상이라서 5월쯤에 복귀할 거라고 하네요.

5) Daniel McCutchen, RHP, Grade C+ : 좋은 4선발이 될거 같지만, 만약 불펜투수로 컨버전한다면 더 도미네이트한 모습을 보일 가능성이 있다.

6) Neil Walker, 3B, Grade C+ : 스트라익존에 대한 판단력이 흐트려졌지만, 그는 아직 젊고(85년 10월생) 3루수로써의 컨버전도 괜찮았다. 아담 라로쉬(Andy LaRoche)가 또 삽질을 한다면 알바레스가 준비되기 전까진 워커에게 좋은 기회가 생길 것이다.
결국 닐 워커의 3루 안착에는 라로쉬의 삽질 + 알바레스의 1루 컨버전이 되어야 가능하다는 평인거 같습니다. 또한, 모든 언론에서도 그렇게 예상하고 있구요.

7) Jimmy Barthmaier, RHP, Grade C+ : 휴스턴이 그의 재능을 간파하지 못했지만, 그는 여전히 좋은 재능을 가지고 있고, 작년 트리플 A에서 좋은 모습을 보여주었다.
글쎄요! 제구력이 형편없어서....일단 케리건 투수코치가 영입되었기때문에 고친다면 고쳐질거 같네요.

8) Evan Meek, RHP, Grade C+ : 파워 싱커가 좋았고 개선된 컨드롤을 보여주었다. 다만, 빅리그에서는 그러한 모습을 보여주지 못했지만....

9) Robbie Grossman, OF, Grade C+ : 툴 가이. 루키레벨에서 보여준 그 참을성을 보여준다면 그는 7 툴 가이가 될 것이다. 지금부터 딱 1년을 이런 모습, 더 좋은 모습을 보여준다면 더 높은 레벨로 올라갈 것이다.

로비 그로스맨은 작년 6월 벅스 6라운드(전체 174번)에 지명되어서 루키레벨에서 고작 5경기에 출전하였고, 16타석동안 B/SO가 4/7의 모습을 보여주었습니다. 일단 18살에 갓 고등학교를 졸업한 툴 가이라서 지금으로썬 어떤 평가보다는 1년이상을 지켜보는게 좋을듯하네요.

10) Jim Negrych, 2B, Grade C+ : 08시즌 초반 캐롤라이나 리그에서는 좋은 파워를 보여줬지만, 더블A로 승격되어서는 그러질 못했다. 하지만 그는 여전히 리그 평균의 파워를 유지했다.
네그레취는 린츠버그(상위 싱글A)까지는 2루와 3루를 오갔지만, 앨투나로 승격후에는 이미 앨투나의 2루수(쉘비 포드)가 있기때문에 줄곧 3루수로만 뛰었습니다. 일단 이 선수의 공격은 괜찮지만, 수비가 돌 글러브라서....

11) Shelby Ford, 2B, Grade C+ : 아직 완성되지 않은 2루수로써의 모습을 보여주었지만, 여전히 그는 리그 평균의 툴을 가지고 있다.
돌 글러브라는 소리입니다.

12) Matt Hague, 3B, Grade C+ : 그는 대학에서도 잘 쳤고, 08시즌 여름에 드레프트되어서 프로에서도 역시 잘 쳤다. 아마 그는 잠재적으로 외야수로 컨버전 할 수 있다. 스틸픽.

아무래도 드레프트 동기이자 마이너리그 최고의 유망주 중에 한 명이 될 알바레스 때문에 컨버전할 것으로 예상됩니다. 또한, 상위레벨에는 짐 네그레취, 닐 워커, 아담 라로쉬가 있기 때문이겠죠.

13) Ron Uviedo, RHP, Grade C+ : 최근에 40인 로스터에 포함된 우발도는 좋은 컨트롤을 지닌 불펜투수가 될 것이다.

14) Brian Friday, SS, Grade C : 난 프라이데이의 글러브가 맘에 들지만, 파워부족은 심히 걱정된다.

15) Quinton Miller, RHP, Grade C : 툴 가이. 하지만 아직 프로에서 투구는 하지 않았다. 일단 스카우팅 리포터에 따르면 BP의 케빈 골드스타인(Kevin Goldstein)에게 좋은 평가를 받았다.

16) Romulo Sanchez, RHP, Grade C : 50이닝 미만의 투구를 한다면 좋은 불펜 자원이 될 것이다.

17) Donald Veal, LHP, Grade C : 룰 5 드레프트로 컵스에서 데려온 빌은 환경이 바뀌고, 릴리프로 컨버전 한다면 좋아질 것이다.

18) Brad Lincoln, RHP, Grade C : 링컨이 제 2의 브라이언 블링턴(Bryan Bullington)이 될거 같다. 하지만, 너무 일찍 포기하지는 마라. 토미 존 서저리 이후 처음으로 작년에 투구했기때문에 지켜볼 필요가 있다.

19) Dan Moskos, LHP, Grade C : 모스코스는 8월에 불펜에서 더 많이 투구했다. 좋은 좌완 스페셜 리스트나 클로저가 될 수도 있지만, 07년 드레프트에서 맷 위터스(Matt Wieters)를 패스한 결과가 그의 책임만은 아니다.

20) Jarek Cunningham, 3B, Grade C : 부상때문에 드레프트전에 평가가 많이 떨어졌지만, 그는 프로에서의 첫 시즌을 훌륭하게 소화했다.

SYSTEM IN BRIEF

벅스의 팜은 굉장히 얇지만, 개선의 노력을 보이고 있다.
전임 단장이었던 데이브 리틀필드(Dave Littlefield)의 시대에는 드레프트에서 많은 돈을 쓰지 않았고, 보통을 허접하게 보냈고, 값싼 대딩을 뽑은 결과 많은 성공을 거두지 못했다. 07년 위터스를 버리고 지명한 모스코스는 자폭모드였다. 닐 헌팅턴(Neal Huntington) 단장 체제로 돌입한 08시즌 드레프트에서는 많은 돈을 투자했고, 그 돈은 약간의 의심스러운 곳에 쓰였지만, 크로스맨, 프리먼, 밀러, 커닝햄과 같은 선수를 영입하면서 팜이 업그레이드 되었다. 비슷한 이유로 머셔, 디 아르노, 헤이그를 드레프트했다.
나는 이러한 리빌딩을 좋아한다. 툴이 많이 있는 대딩과 고딩이 혼합된 그런 리빌딩말이죠.
분명 한명의 슈퍼스타가 될 소지가 있는 유망주에게 목을 매는거 보다는 이러한 방법이 훨 났다.
리틀필드는 세련된 유망주를 선호했다면, 헌팅턴은 원석에 가까운 유망주를 선호하고 있다.
만약 08시즌에 뽑은 유망주들이 좋은 모습을 보여준다면 그건 good news일거다.
시간이 많이 소비되는 방향일지 몰라도 분명 좋은 결과가 돌아올 것이다.
어쨎든 지금의 벅스 조직에는 3명의 탑 유망주들이 있고, 이들을 지금 뭐라 말할 단계는 아니지만 분명 폭발할 것이다.

Ranking Challenges: The moment that he signed (or signed again, depending on how you look at it), Alvarez instantly became the top prospect in the system. Morris' youth and his performance after Tommy John surgery gives him an advantage over Lincoln, who is coming back from the same procedure, while the two over-slot 2008 draftees fit in between. Walker was a rather easy (albeit uninspiring) choice to follow at number eight, and the number nine through 11 slots could be occupied by any of the next 10 players.
일단 모든 사이트에서 추측한대로 6월 드레프트에서 벅스 1라운드(전체 2번)에 지명된 페드로 알바레스(Pedro Alvarez)가 1위와 별 5개를 받았습니다. 그리고 드레프트 이전에 벅스 최고의 유망주였던 앤드류 맥커첸(Andrew McCutchen)이 2위와 별 5개를 받았습니다. 일단 팀 유망주중에 별 5개짜리가 2명이 있다는것은 호의적인 소식일 수 있습니다.
그 뒤로는 양키스에서 데려온 호세 타바타(Jose Tabata)가 뒤이어 별 4개를 받았습니다. 역시 이 선수는 자신을 컨트롤 할 수 있느냐가 미래의 성공을 좌우할 듯합니다.
뒤이어 다저스에서 받아온 브라이언 모리스(Bryan Morris)는 일단 현재 토미 존 서저리를 받은 어깨가 부상이 아니라 다리쪽의 부상이라서...암튼 복귀는 내년 5월달이라고 하네요.
그 외에 5~7위는 별로 기대안하고 있습니다.
8위에 선정된 닐 워커(Neil Walker)같은 경우는 아무래도 페드로 알바레스의 성장속도나 컨버전 여부에 따라 워커의 포지션이 결정되지 않을까 싶습니다. 일단 08시즌에 트리플A팀에서 풀시즌을 소화했기때문에 내년에 3루부분에서 역시 다저스에서 건너온 앤디 라로쉬와 경쟁을 하지 않을까 생각됩니다.
9위는 올해의 벅스 마이너리거로 뽑힌 Jim Negrych가 선정되었습니다.
단지 의문인것은 브라이언 프라이데이(Brian Friday)가 10위라는 것과 양키스에서 건너온 다니엘 맥커첸(Daniel McCutchen)이 선정되지 못했다는 점, 쉴비 포드(Shelby Ford)의 이름을 찾아볼 수도 없다는 것입니다.
제이미 로막은 아무래도 나이(85년생)때문에 순위가 밀리지 않았나 싶네요.

Jason Delaney

Originally drafted by the Pirates in the 12th round of the 2005 draft, Delaney has split his time in the organization between first base and the corner outfield positions over the past three-plus seasons.
05년 벅스 12라운드로 지명된 제이슨 딜레이니(Jason Delaney)는 벅스조직에서 1루수와 코너 외야수를 왔다갔다했다.

After a poor showing during his short stint in Williamsport, Delaney spent '06 putting up a very respectable .300/.379/.432 line at Hickory that was low on power but not excessively low for a player who wasn't really known as a heavy-hitter. He complemented that with a respectable 79:56 K:BB ratio that reflected the strong plate discipline he had shown in college.

He did, however, put up the same 52:38 K:BB ration for the Curve as he did in Lynchburg in only 27 fewer AB's, a definite positive to carry forward.

Anderson was the 12th round pick in this summer's draft, and the most glaring landmark to this young man's career is that he is an absolute behemoth. Standing at 6'7" and 240 lbs., it's hard to argue against Anderson fitting the power hitter mold. In three seasons at Southern A&M University, Anderson posted a .349/.450/.590 line and a 81:42 K:BB ratio in 330 AB's.

Pedro Alvarez

Do I really need to remind you when this guy was drafted? Of course not. We are all well aware of his impressive pedigree and his power potential, but we also know he was drafted as a third baseman. There have been inklings of rumors that Alvarez's body may eventually grow into a first-baseman role, a la Albert Pujols, Lance Berkman or Mark Teixeira. There's also still the possibility that Andy LaRoche reaches the .295 AVG, .900 OPS potential he showed
throughout his minor league career, and that by the time Alvarez reaches Pittsburgh moving him across the diamond might be necessary. That's a ways away, but it's certainly not an alien-abduction level shot in the dark.

As we all know, the Pirates once again have a top-five draft pick this season - No. 4 to be exact. Ackley is a 1B (slash future OF?) that everyone is absolutely raving about, even referred to - like Avarez - as the best pure hitter in the upcoming draft. He is now dueling with Grant Green, the SS out of USC, for the title of best collegiate hitter in the draft. The Pirates may well take a pitcher this year in the first round, but two of the three teams picking ahead of them either have a 1B in the system (Chris Marrero with the Nats) or aren't showing a glaring need for one (Adrian Gonzalez with the Pads), so the Pirates just might find themselves again having the chance to pick between a really great CIF hitter and a really great MIF hitter.

Drafting Ackley could likely hinge on whether the team is convinced of either LaRoche or Alvarez's development predicating a move, which is still very up in the air, but it's a definite option to consider. Also, even if management does think that Alvarez would need to move eventually, having two top-flight first basemen in your system is what some would refer to as a "happy problem."

The Pirates signed pitcher Chris Cullen to a minor league contract. Cullen, 22, was 5-1 with a 3.20 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 27 walks in 56 innings for Edmonton in the independent Golden Baseball League this past summer. He previously pitched at Michigan State University.

If the Pirates like what they see of Pedro Alvarez in the spring, he could skip the first three rungs of the professional ladder on his way to Pittsburgh.

Management's plan, as detailed by director of player development Kyle Stark, is to have the franchise's prized draft pick start out in high Class A at Lynchburg, Va., or, if Alvarez is not deemed ready, in low Class A with the new affiliate in Charleston, W.Va.

"If Pedro's ready to go, we're going to be aggressive with him," Stark said. "It depends on what we see from him, how he adjusts to the game, what kind of shape he's in, a lot of factors. But I can tell you we're not going to rush him just to make up for lost time."

Most draft picks start out in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League or the short-season New York-Penn League. But, because of Alvarez's much-publicized contract dispute, he was unable to play in either of those late-summer leagues. His only action came in September with a month in the Florida Instructional League, but that is not considered formal.

No statistics were kept for Alvarez's performance in Florida, but team officials who witnessed him -- including Pirates manager John Russell -- were effusive in their praise of his hitting and satisfied with his defense at third base.

"As advertised," Stark said of the bat. "He projects to be a middle-of-the-order bat, and that's exactly what he looked like."

A debut in high Class A would not be unprecedented. The Baltimore Orioles started catcher Matt Wieters -- the player the Pirates bypassed in the 2007 draft -- at that level before he quickly moved to Class AA on his way to becoming Baseball America's minor league player of the year.
