오늘 AFL AFL championship game이 끝나면서 AFL일정이 모두 마무리 되었습니다.

벅스의 마이너리거들은 Scottsdale Scorpions에 소속되어서 출전했는데, 이 팀은 애리조나, 피츠버그, 필라델피아, SF, 시카고 컵스, 콜로라도의 유망주들로 구성되어 있는 팀입니다.

이 중 벅스의 마이너리거는 총 6명이 참가했습니다. 하나하나 나열해보죠.

체이스 다노(Chase D'Arnaud)

필리스의 유망주 트레비스 다노(Travis D'Arnaud)의 2살 형이기도 한 체이스는 작년 벅스 4라운드(전체 114번픽)로 지명되었습니다.
벅스 내 지명동기이자 다노보다 낮은 6라운드(전체 174번픽)에 지명된 로빈 그로스맨(Robbie Grossman)보다 낮은 평가를 받았지만, 그로스맨이 올시즌 엄청난 삼진(164K)을 당하며 싱글 A에서만 뛰는 사이 다노는 싱글 A와 상위 싱글 A에서 비슷한 타석수(싱글 : 255타석, 상위 싱글 A : 253타수)를 보장받으며 좋은 활약을 했고, 린츠버그(벅스 상위 싱글 A팀)가 리그 우승을 차지하는데 공을 세웠습니다. 물론 정작 중요한 포스트시즌에서는 삽질을 했지만, 이런 경험이 그에겐 플러스 요인이 될 겁니다.

시즌 후 AFL 맴버로 합류한 다노는 20경기에 출전해 무안타경기가 3경기뿐일 정도로 꾸준한 타격을 선보였는데, 대부분 팀의 선두타자로 활약한 덕분(?)에 이번 AFL 도루리더(13도루/2도루자)가 되었습니다.

브라이언 프라이데이(Brian Friday)

빅리그의 빅슬러(Brian Bixler)나 루이스 크루즈(Luis Cruz)와 비슷한 유형의 타입인 프라이데이는 타격보단 수비력으로 주목을 받고 있는 선수입니다.
이 선수와 중복되는 느낌이 벌써 두 선수나 있는데 굳이 AFL에 보냈어야 하느냐는 의문이 생기네요. 차리리 올해 부상으로 경기감각이 전혀 없는 닐 워커(Neil Walker)나 올해 1라운더인 산체스(Tony Sanchez)를 보내는게 좋지 않았을까 하는 생각까지 드네요.

워커의 경우는 빅리그에서 38타수나 기록했기때문에 AFL명단에 들 수 있을지는 잘 모르겠네요. 산체스는 Scottsdale Scorpions의 주전포수인 포지(Buster Posey)가 있기때문에 불가능했을 수도 있겠네요.

일단 전체적인 기대치는 AAA의 레귤러 유격수입니다.

호세 타바타(Jose Tabata)

벅스가 이번 AFL에 투수 3명, 타자 3명을 보냈는데, 투타에서 가장 좋은 활약을 한 선수에 해당되는 타바타는 양키스의 유망주로 널리 알려졌던 인물입니다.
작년에 벅스로 와서 좋은 시즌을 보내며 기대를 갇게 했지만, 올초에 뜻하지않는 불상사(아내가 남의 아이를 유괴하는 범죄를 저질렀죠)를 겪으며 심적으로 야구에만 집중할 수 없는 환경에 놓였습니다.

그리고 애틀란타에서 고키스(Gorkys Hernandez)가, 네츠에서 밀리지(Lastings Milledge)가 건너오면서 한때 벅스의 CF라인에 병목현상까지 발생하게 되었습니다.
다행이 멕커첸이 맥클라우스의 이적으로 빅리그로 승격하고, 밀리지가 빅리그로 승격하면서 AAA에서는 타바타, AA에서는 고키스가 정착하게 되면서 다시 한 번 좋은 시즌을 보냈습니다.

AFL 마지막날 경기에서 7타수 6안타를 기록하면서 최고의 마무리로 시즌을 끝낸 타바타는 일단 내년시작을 인디애나폴리스에서 시작할 것으로 예상됩니다. 헌팅턴단장이 3M정도의 외야수를 영입할 생각이라고 했지만, 현실적으로 그런 돈을 지불하고 데려올 외야수라면 차라리 따른곳에 돈을 썼으면 좋겠네요.

일단 전문가들은 타바타가 코너 외야수로 뛰기에는 파워가 부족하다는 평가를 내리고 있는데, 원래 포지션인 CF로 갈수도 없는 노릇이죠. 이미 벅스에는 그들의 '박힌 돌'인 엔드류 멕커첸이 있으니까요.
다만 밀리지가 메츠와 네츠시절의 '땡깡'을 보여주며 삽질을 한다면 생각보다 일은 쉽게 해결될 가능성도 있어보입니다.

다니엘 모스코스(Danny Moskos)

07년 벅스 드레프트 1라운드(전체 4번픽)로 뽑힌 모스코스에게는 항상 전체 5번픽으로 뽑힌 위터스(Matt Wieters)의 이름이 따라다닙니다. 벅스의 사정을 생각한다면 사인어빌러티가 좀 더 가능했던 모스코스를 선택하게 된 이유이기도 합니다.

모스코스는 드레프트된 07년(15.2이닝)과 08년(110.1이닝)에 부상으로 많은 이닝을 소화하지 못하면서 벅스구단에서조차 비웃음을 사게 되었습니다.
하지만 올해 오랜 부상에서 탈출하며 150이닝가까이(149이닝)를 투구했습니다.
일단 내년에 AA에서 시작하다가 AAA로 콜업되거나 처음부터 AAA에서 시작할 수도 있을거 같습니다.
드레프트된 후 2년밖에 지나지않았기때문에 아직 룰 5 드레프트 대상자가 아니어서 조금은 여유로운 상황이기도 합니다.

이번 AFL에서는 릴리프로 던졌는데, 이게 벅스에서 부탁한 사항인지는 알려지지 않았는데, 일부 전문가들은 그의 최대 실링을 스윙맨으로 보기때문에 벅스에서 지시한 사항일 수도 있다는 생각이 드네요.
물론 오랜 부상때문에 선발을 배제시켰을 수도 있습니다.

도니 빌(Donnie Veal)

작년 룰 5 드레프트로 컵스에서 데려온 빌은 시즌 내내 부상으로 빅리그와 마이너를 오르락거리며 2만 5천불이라도 아꼈어야 하지않나 하는 평가까지 나왔지만, 부상을 털어내고 AFL에서 대활약을 하며 내년시즌 기대를 갇게 했습니다. 7번의 선발등판 중 한 경기에서 난타(2.1이닝동안 5피안타 3실점)당한 것을 제외하곤 준수한 성적을 찍었고, 11월 2일에는 '이 주의 AFL 투수'로 선정되기도 했습니다.

내년 벅스 로테이션은 폴 마홈, 잭 듀크, 로스 오렌더프, 케빈 하트(or 호세 아스카니오), 찰리 모튼으로 구성될 가능성이 높은지라 로테이션 진입을 어려울 거 같습니다. 일단 빌은 내년에 롱릴리프나 6~7회 멀티이닝 릴리프가 될 가능성이 높을 겁니다.

앤써니 왓슨(Tony Watson)

06년 볼티모어의 17라운드로 지명되었지만, 계약을 거부하고 이듬해인 07년 벅스의 9라운드(전체 278번픽)로 계약을 한 왓슨은 올해 부상으로 인해 15.1이닝만을 투구했습니다.
07년도에는 뉴욕팬리그에서 미드시즌 올스타로 선정될만큼 가치있는 투구를 하며 08시즌까지 상승세를 이어갔지만, 올해 부상으로 한순간에 가치가 폭락했습니다.
커리어내내 선발투수였던 왓슨은 AFL에서 릴리프로만 투구했는데, 아무래도 투구리듬을 찾게 해줄려는 배려가 아닐까 싶네요. 일단 플라이볼형 투수이기때문에 홈런만 줄인다면(작년에 151.2이닝투구하며 16피홈런) 괜찮은 4선발은 될 수 있어 보입니다만 반대로 AAA형 투수가 될 가능성도 높습니다. 내년에 앨투나(더블 A)에서 시즌을 시작하겠지만, 부상으로 인해 자신의 포지션을 결정해야할 기로에 있는 한 해가 될거 같네요.

Pirates' Alvarez ranked No. 1 in Eastern League

Baseball America yesterday named three Pirates minor league players among its top 15 prospects in the Class AA Eastern League, including Pedro Alvarez at No. 1.

Alvarez, who finished last season with the Altoona Curve by collecting 14 home runs, 55 RBIs and a .247 average, was selected by the magazine along with pitcher Brad Lincoln (No. 10) and outfielder Jose Tabata (No. 15) among the Eastern League's top 20 prospects. Alvarez, the second pick of the 2008 draft, finished his first professional season with 27 homers and 95 RBIs combined at Altoona and Class A Lynchburg, far and away the best totals in the Pirates' minor and major league system except for Garrett Jones Indianapolis/Pirates 33 homers and 94 RBIs.

The magazine earlier in the week named Alvarez No. 3 and infielder Chase D'Arnaud No. 13 among the top prospects in the Class A Carolina League, which D'Arnaud and Lynchburg won. It also had pitcher Rudy Owens No. 11 and '09 fourth-overall pick Tony Sanchez, a catcher, at No. 12 among South Atlantic prospects. Compensatory-round pick Victor Black, a pitcher, was ranked sixth in the New York-Penn League.
페드로 알바레스가 어제 BA가 선정한 더블 A 이스턴 리그(Eastern League)의 유망주 순위 1위를 차지했습니다. 벅스는 이외에도 10위의 브레드 린컨(Brad Lincoln)과 15위의 호세 타바타(Jose Tabata)가 선정되었습니다.

최근에는 드레프트되고서 빠른 콜업을 시키는데 알바레스도 계약문제가 일찍 끝났으면 올시즌 벅스에서 볼 수 있지 않았을까 싶네요.

일단 올해 린츠버그에서는 (다소) 삽질했지만, 앨투나로 승격되어서는 아주 좋은 모습을 보였고, 야구월드컵에서도 좋은 활약으로 미국이 금메달을 따는게 일조를 했죠.

현지시간으로 10월 6일날 발표된 싱글 A 케롤라이나 리그에서는 3위에 알바레스와 13위에 체이스 디 아르노(Chase D'Arnaud)가 선정되었습니다.

To be eligible for a league's list, a pitcher must have thrown 1/3 inning for each team game or have made 20 appearances (10 in short-season and rookie-level leagues). Hitters need one plate appearance for each team game.
BA의 유망주 랭킹은 해당리그에서 BA기준에 맞춘 조건만 성립되면 유망주리스트에 올라가니 두 개의 레벨에 동시에 올라가는 경우도 흔하죠. 위에 원문은 BA가 선정한 기준입니다. 기준이 아주 미미하죠. 기준표(?)는 별 의미를 두지않는게 편할 겁니다. BA는 전통적으로 나이와 툴을 중시하는 곳이기 때문이죠.

Alvarez EL's top prospect, Lincoln and Tabata also ranked in Top 15

In yet another edition of The Future Is Coming, The Future Is Coming, the franchise with the advanced-Class A champion in Lynchburg also has three of the Top 15 prospects in Class AA's Eastern League according to Baseball America today -- and Pedro Alvarez is No. 1.
위에 말했듯이 벅스의 더블 A팀인 앨투나 커브에서는 3명이 Top 20에 올랐고 이들은 Top 15안에 포함되었습니다. 팀은 BA가 선정한 올해 최악의 팀 중에 하나로 선정되었지만 선수 개개인의 실링은 아주 높게 평가되었습니다.

Look at it this way : The Pirates don't get many No. 1s, outside of the All-Time North American Record for Consecutive Losing Seasons.

The Eastern League MVP (Carlos Santana of Akron), the son of a member of the last bunch of Pirates winners (Reading's Kyle Drabek, Doug's boy) and the next-great Giants pitcher (Madison Bumgarner) all were ranked by the sport's prospect bible as less than promising than Alvarez. Although, as BA's John Manuel wrote in a story posted today, Bowie left-hander Brian Matusz, who went 5-3 with parent-club Baltimore including victories in his final three starts with a 2.57 ERA, would've finished No. 1 except that on his way through the EL to the bigs he fell one inning short of the magazine's criteria of 20 appearances.

BA's summation of Alvarez, only for registered subscribers, begins thusly : "Alvarez had an eventful calendar year, signing late last September. . ., [starting] slowly at high Class A Lynchburg, striking out in 25 percent of his at-bats." It quotes one anonymous manager as citing this third baseman's "serious raw power" and others referring to his "plus arm" and deft hands, making up for his "modest range and agility." Portland manager Arnie Beyelor called him "a monster. He reminded me a little bit of [Boston's Kevin] Youkilis in that he's a better athlete than he looks." Alvarez hit .333 with 13 home runs, 40 RBIs, 34 walks, 59 strikeouts and a .590 slugging percentage in 222 EL at-bats.

Lincoln went 1-5 in 13 starts, but crafted a 2.28 ERA and allowed batters just a .228 average before he ascended to Class AAA. There, with Indianapolis, he went 6-2 with a 4.70 ERA, but 42 strikeouts against 10 walks in 61 1/3 innings.

He had two homers in 228 at-bats with Altoona, three more in 134 at-bats with Class AAA Indianapolis -- where his .276 batting average was a slight dip from his .303 with the Curve. He compiled 22 doubles in 362 total at-bats.

Interesting to note, BA looked back five years. . . when the Mets' David Wright was their No. 1 EL prospect, the Giants' Matt Cain was No. 3 and No. 6 -- just ahead of Detroit's Curtis Granderson and Philadelphia's Ryan Howard -- was Zach Duke.
저는 이게 가장 흥미롭네요. 5년전 BA랭킹에서 당시 이스턴 리그 1위가 메츠의 데이빗 라이트였고, 3위가 SF의 맷 케인이었는데 6위가 잭 듀크였네요. 당시 듀크가 디트로이트의 커티스 그랜더슨과 필리스의 라이언 하워드보다 더 높은 순위였다고 합니다. 제가 그랜더슨의 나이는 잘 모르겠으나 BA특성상 하워드는 충분히 그럴수 있었다는 생각이 드네요. 앞에 말했지만 나이를 (엄청) 중시하는 곳이 BA인지라....

P.S. 써놓고 보니 이게 BA 선수 스카우팅 리포터가 아니군요. 그냥 선수 소갯글 같습니다.

Often, when the Pirates have some commemorative event for a championship team, then win the game later the same day, all kinds of intangible, inspirational connections get made.

To be sure, plenty of those were heard after the 12-2 rout of the Cincinnati Reds last night before 32,570 at PNC Park: It brought a season-best five-game winning streak, and it followed a moving ceremony to honor 22 members of the 1979 Family, highlighted by Chuck Tanner, 80 years old and recovering from heart surgery, getting warmly embraced as all huddled around their World Series trophy.

내일 경기는 호머 베일리(Homer Bailey)가 선발로 등판하는데, 저번에 린스컴과의 맞대결에서 타선이 린스컴격파를 앞두고 자신이 무너졌습니다. 확실히 베일리는 공만 빠르다는 생각밖에 안드네요. 공이 빠르다면 충분히 자신의 커맨드로 타자를 앞도하고 게임을 리딩할 줄알아야하는데 그런게 전혀안되죠.

그냥 내일 벅스의 시즌최다인 6연승에 재물이 되길....

Cedeno out until Tuesday

Shortstop Ronny Cedeno has a hairline fracture in his right pinky, but he should miss no more than the games last night and today.

Cedeno was hurt Friday when a Micah Owings bouncer jammed him on the throwing hand. He stayed in the game, but the finger swelled yesterday, and X-rays revealed a tiny fracture on the tip.

Manager John Russell said that, because it was in the tip rather than a joint, it will be no more than a matter of waiting for pain and swelling to subside. Cedeno could return Tuesday.
유격수 로니 세데뇨(Ronny Cedeno)가 오른쪽 새끼손가락 골절로 화요일까지는 경기에 나서지 않을거라는군요. 레즈와 첫날 오윙스의 공을 치다가 타쳤는데 X-ray결과 약간의 실금이 갔다네요.

There remains no timetable for pitcher Jose Ascanio (shoulder) to resume throwing. If he does not do so soon, he probably will not pitch again this season.
아스카니오(Jose Ascanio)가 얼마전 어깨건염으로 DL로 갔는데 아직 언제 피칭을 제계할지 결정하지 않았다고 합니다. 이제 시즌이 6주도 남지않았기에 무리할 필요는 없어보이는군요.

밀리지가 빅리그로 콜업되면서 조직내 마이너에 있는 CF유망주들의 배치와 교통정리가 원활해졌고, 밀리지의 콜업 후 호세 타바타(Jose Tabata)가 인디애나폴리스로 콜업되었는데, 잘때려주고 있습니다.
개인적으로 내년에 수비가 어설픈 가렛 존슨을 1루로 고정하고 밀리지(LF)-맥커첸(CF)-타바타(RF)로 갔으면 좋겠네요.

GM : Trade not financially motivated

The Pirates' trade of All-Star outfielder Nate McLouth had some players on the team and fans in Pittsburgh scratching their heads. General manager Neal Huntington tried to explain his rationale for the deal in an e-mail to Pirates season-ticket holders.
이 트레이드로 3명의 프로스펙터를 얻었지만, 벅스의 팬들은 당황했다. GM 닐 헌팅턴(Neal Huntington)은 벅스 시즌 티켓터들에게 이메일을 보내 이런 일련의 과정에 대해 구구절절한 변명(?)을 했다.

Huntington made it clear in the letter that the trade, in which Pittsburgh received three prospects from the Atlanta Braves, wasn't financially motivated.

"I understand why some people, at first glance, may believe this move was financially motivated, but I can assure you that this was strictly a baseball decision," Huntington wrote. "In fact, our owner, Bob Nutting, was as surprised as some of our fans when we sought his approval for this trade. I am grateful that he has the faith in me, our baseball operations staff and the processes we have in place to approve a move like this, despite the risk of public backlash on him personally and the organization as a whole."

On Wednesday, the Pirates dealt McLouth, one of their best players, to the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of the Braves' top prospects, along with pitchers Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke. The 27-year-old McLouth set career highs last season with a .276 batting average, 26 homers and 94 RBIs.

First baseman Adam LaRoche was one of the more vocal Pirates players in discussing his anger toward the trade.

그리고 본문에서도 나와있듯이 멕커첸의 진행을 더 이상 막을 수가 없는것도 하나의 이유일 겁니다. 비단 멕커첸만이 아닌 양키스에서 데려온 타바타(Jose Tabata)의 거취도 이제는 신중히 생각해야했기에 이런 결정을 하지 않았을까 합니다.

Three observations

1) El Toro is stealing the show.

The kid is Pedro Alvarez -- the No. 2 pick in the 2008 draft -- and while he may not take a swing at PNC Park in 2009, he was all the buzz in Pirate City.


"It's hard not to love what you see," GM Neal Huntington said one morning, with the big smile of a guy who'd just taken a new set of wheels out for a spin. "Tremendous upside. It's been 10 months since he last played a competitive game, but we're already seeing it. You hear [first base coach] Perry Hill talk about how he likes the foundation of what he does defensively as a third baseman; you hear [hitting coach] Don Long talk about how he's got an advanced approach as a hitter; you hear Manny Sanguillen drop the Willie Stargell comparison. He's still 22 and got a long ways to go, but the ceiling, we're certainly seeing it. We're very pleased with his progress."

Listed at 6-foot-3, 233 pounds -- his teammates at Vanderbilt called him "El Toro" (The Bull) -- Alvarez, to the delight of the Pirates, reported to camp slimmed down after his conditioning was questioned this winter. Watch Alvarez take his cuts in person, and you immediately see his offensive skills: the scary bat speed that allows him to rip balls to all fields; the quick hands that permit him to let the ball go deep into the strike zone; the professional approach at the plate that allows him to consistently make solid contact. Scouts and coaches wonder if Alvarez ultimately will stay at third. He possesses a good arm, but has average range and agility. Regardless, whether it's at third or in the outfield, Alvarez will be a premier No. 3 hitter and the face of the Pirates for years to come. As for his arrival in The Show? Interestingly enough, Pirates manager John Russell hasn't ruled out the possibility that he will be starring at PNC Park this summer. Stayed tuned.

The three keys to the Pirates' season, according to Wilson: "Pitching, pitching and pitching." Last season the Pirates were dead last in the NL in team ERA (5.08), batting average against (.286) and walks (657). Enter new pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, Pittsburgh's fourth in five years. At his last stop in Philly, Kerrigan was criticized at times for being too hands-off with his pitchers; with this young Pirates staff, he's been anything but. By the second day of camp, Kerrigan had already crouched behind the plate and caught for over half of the 28 hurlers in camp. After watching film of the 2008 staff and concluding that hurlers didn't pitch inside enough, he's installed dummy hitters at the plate for his pitchers' side sessions.

Much has been made about the Pirates' run of 16 straight losing seasons. Given that this is virtually the same team that went 17-37 after the Jason Bay and Xavier Nady deals at the trade deadline and finished with its fourth consecutive 90-loss season, a 17th appears inevitable. Not so fast. Good-luck charm Eric Hinske is here. Hinske was on the '07 Red Sox and the '08 Rays, so a World Series berth for the Steel City must not be far off, right? Hinske says he feels the same kind of vibe in the Bucs clubhouse he felt a year ago in Rays camp. "In Tampa, a lot of the young guys just hadn't figured it out," he says. "Once some guys started to, it was contagious. I think the same thing can happen here. There's a lot of talent here, too, that just hasn't come out."

"It makes you think that it can happen for anybody. You keep that in your thoughts. They're where you want to get to."

Said Huntington, "Anytime you see a team go from 90-plus losses to 90-plus wins, it gives you hope. It gives you reasons for optimism. You look at the Twins and they lose Johan Santana and Torii Hunter and brought in some young players and really built around their core. Projected to win somewhere in the low 70s, they won in the upper 80s and played a meaningful game one day after the season ended last year."

One day after workouts, Russell was talking about -- who else? -- The Phenom, Alvarez, when he suddenly changed the subject. "You know, you should watch [Jose] Tabata hit," he replied. "Jose Tabata is kind of going under the radar here, but this kid has a special bat as well."

Indeed, Tabata's been under Alvarez's shadow, but he's shown that he will be a big part of the Pirates future, as well. Tabata -- acquired in July in the Nady trade with the Yankees -- is expected to start the season at Class AA Altoona to start the season, but he'll get at-bats at Class AAA Indianapolis and may even take a few cuts in Pittsburgh late this year. Tabata earned a bad reputation in the Yankees organization after leaving a game early at Class AA Trenton, but the Pirates have liked Tabata's quiet attitude thus far. The Pirates have also liked what they've seen on the field this spring -- he has big gap power that they think ultimately will turn into home run power.

If you haven't noticed, Ryan Doumit has quietly emerged as a top fantasy catcher. At 28, Doumit is entering his prime and showed remarkable consistency last year -- there wasn't a month that he hit below .290. Last spring, Doumit -- a former outfielder and first baseman -- didn't even bring his catcher's mitt to camp, but then he took the starting job from Ronny Paulino. His .318 batting average would have ranked fourth in the league, but he was 37 plate appearances short of qualifying. Doumit won't fall short this year. Coaches in Pirates camp think he's primed for a big year. While he won't have any eye-popping RBI totals in the Pirates lineup, he's a decent bet to hit over .300 with close to 20 home runs.
