Indians Add Bixler, Send Hard-Hitting Brito To Pirates

The Deal

빅슬러는 6년전 드레프트된 이후 줄곧 다재다능한 내야수였다. 마이너에서 평균 .282 AVG를 기록하며 약간의 파워와 유격수로 솔리드한 수비력을 지닌 장점으로 07년과 08년 BA 벅스랭킹 7위에 오를 수가 있었다. 하지만 상위레벨로 올라갈수록 컨택능력이 떨어지고, 타석에서의 참착성이 무뎌졌다. 최근 2년간의 짦은 빅리그 생활동안 그의 KO/BB는 62/8에 불과하며 .178 AVG만을 기록했다. 그럴 시기에 그의 수비레인지도 좁아졌고, 도루능력도 퇴보되었다. 멕시칸 윈터리그에서 140타수동안 .300/.372/.457 의 모습과 솔리드한 수비를 보여주며 반등하기도 했다. 해서 그는 빅리그에서 유틸리티 플레이어가 적당할 것이다.

Before getting to your questions, I must first play messenger. I was taking some personal vacation time last Tuesday when an e-mail showed up on my Blackberry from former Pirates reliever Salomon Torres.

How can the Pirates expect to move forward without veteran players such as Doug Mientkiewicz? I'm not saying replace Adam LaRoche with him, but he doesn't seem to be a bad player to have on the roster and is good leader. So, to really get to my question: Does Doug have a future in Pittsburgh or not?

Pirates management is hopeful that Mientkiewicz has a future in Pittsburgh. The Bucs are ready to make an offer, but the question remains whether it will be enough to keep Mientkiewicz from signing with another team with which he could have the possibility of earning a starting spot. That's something that Mientkiewicz is looking into right now.

The Pirates are certainly going to make a run at landing a veteran starter and one that they can sign for a reasonable sum. That takes the Bucs out of the running for your top-tier free-agent types. But you look at a guy such as Penny, and you see a pitcher who will likely seek out a short-term deal and will not need to be offered a high-dollar figure because of a down year last season. It's definitely a risk to sign a pitcher coming off shoulder problems, but there surely could be a nice reward if the former Los Angeles starter regains his form.

There are a number of players that could fit in this "Penny" category, so to speak: Mike Hampton, Curt Schilling, Mark Prior ... and the list goes on. In other words, if the Pirates want to take a gamble on a pitcher who has once been among the league's best but endured injuries in '08, the options will be there. And I would not be surprised if the Pirates do, in fact, go down that path.

The Yankees did not pick up Marte's $6 million option, but soon after signed him to a three-year deal, reportedly worth $12 million.

The Pirates are currently going through numerous applications and tapes before narrowing down the group of candidates and conducting formal interviews for the second play-by-play spot.

To begin with, management is not yet ready to give up on Brian Bixler. Those of us who watched Bixler this season saw few signs that he would be ready to take over as the team's everyday shortstop in the near future. His defense was average, and, quite frankly, he looked overmatched on offense. Pirates management, however, still considers him a legitimate option for next season.

That's why management could consider Bixler -- or Jack Wilson, if he is not dealt away -- as a placeholder.

Ownership and management is certainly not proud of the fact that the organization has had 16 consecutive losing seasons, but they are not looking to take ownership of each of those 16 years. You look at the current management team, and it's more accurate to say it has endured one losing season. Same with ownership, which underwent a change prior to the '08 season. Attaching what happened in 1993 with a group of people who were not with the organization doesn't make sense.

That said, this new core is certainly keen on getting things turned around under their watch. They want to be competitive next year. What is the deal with Freddy Sanchez? Is he going to be healthy at the start of next year?

Sanchez was bothered all season by pain in his right shoulder, but he is expected to make a full recovery over the offseason. There is no need for any sort of offseason surgery. Almost everyone seems to believe that rest is all that is needed for Sanchez to get back to 100 percent strength in his shoulder, and that's just something he wasn't able to get during the season. He should be ready for all activities at the start of Spring Training.

Realistically, how do you see the starting lineup for next year? You can just type in the word "free agent" if you think there might be one at a certain position.

Obviously, much can change in the next six months, but looking at how things stand now, here's my best guess. I would expect a starting outfield consisting of Nate McLouth, Brandon Moss and Nyjer Morgan to start the year. Morgan made quite the impression with the club in September, and I get the sense that the Pirates aren't yet ready to commit to Andrew McCutchen.

I don't expect the right side of the infield to change, so you can pencil in Adam LaRoche and Sanchez there. With the left side of the infield, however, I can't say the same. I'd have to say that chances are better than even that Jack Wilson will be traded over the next few months, leaving a void at short. I'm hesitant to say that if this happens, Brian Bixler or Luis Cruz would be the replacement, because, quite frankly, neither seems ready for the full-time job. If the Pirates do deal Wilson, there would almost certainly be a push to find a capable replacement from outside the organization.

As for third base, management still seems set on Andy LaRoche over Neil Walker. However, the club does need a right-handed power bat, and if there is an opportunity to pick up a solid right-handed-hitting third baseman from either the free-agent pool or trade market, that would seem to make sense. LaRoche didn't perform well enough in '08 to warrant no competition for a starting role.

Ryan Doumit will be the Opening Day starting catcher. And as for the rotation, well, I'll leave that discussion for another day.

Burnett has about two years of Major League service time, meaning that he is one season away from being arbitration eligible. He'd have three arbitration years before the organization could lose him to free agency. Based on the Pirates' need of another left-handed arm in the bullpen and Burnett's increased success in a later-inning role, yes, I'd expect him to be a part of the bullpen next season.
