니그로리그 야구 기념관(Negro Leagues Baseball Museum)에서 주최하는 Larry Doby Award상은 매년 각 리그의 신인왕을 선정하는데, 2009년 신인왕에 NL의 앤드류 맥커첸(Andrew McCutchen)과 AL의 앨비스 엔드러스(Elvis Andrus)가 수상의 영광을 안았습니다.

이 두 선수는 다가오는 30일 캔사스시티에서 열리는 기념식에서 상을 받을 거라고 합니다.

벅스는 브라이언 베스(Brian Bass), 룩 카린(Luke Carlin), 브라이언 메이로우(Bryan Myrow)와 마이너리그 계약을 체결했습니다.

마이너리그를 체우는 용도로 쓰이겠죠.

몇일전 팬하우스닷컴에서는 올시즌 찰리 모튼(Charlie Morton)이 슬리퍼(다크호스)가 될 수 있다고 합니다. 지난 6월 네이트 맥클라우스(Nate McLouth)딜로 애틀란타에서 넘어온 모튼은 지금껏 그 어떤 유망주사이트에서도 상위에 랭크되지 못했다고 합니다.

그리고 그의 그런 평가에는 불안정한 투구가 문제였는데, 특히 볼넷을 남발했다고 합니다. 올해 애틀란타 마이너생활까지 합쳐 9이닝당 4.3개의 볼넷을 허용했지만, 벅스로 트레이드되어와서는 조 케리건(Joe Kerrigan)투수코치의 영향때문인지, 18경기 선발등판해서 3.7개로 떨어뜨렸습니다. 애틀란타 빅리그에서는 16경기(15선발)에서 4.9개였습니다.

해서 기본적으로 싱킹 페스트볼을 던지는 모튼에게 피홈런율이 낮기때문에 아주(는 아니고) 좋은 시즌을 보낼 수 있을것이라고 하는군요.

벅스의 올해 로테이션은 폴 마홈(Paul Maholm), 잭 듀크(Zach Duke), 로스 오렌더프(Ross Ohlendorf)가 확정인 상태에서 모튼, 호세 아스카니오(Jose Ascanio), 케빈 하트(Kevin Hart), 도니 빌(Donnie Veal)이 나머지 2자리를 두고 경합을 벌일 것으로 예상됩니다.

빌은 작년 룰 5 드레프트로 데려와서 올해 빅리그 로스터에 없어도 되지만, 그가 오랜기간동안 부상자명단에 있었기때문에 그 기간만큼은 필히 빅리그 로스터에 있어야 한다는군요.

잠재적으로는 크리스 재커바우스커스(Chris Jakubauskas)도 합류할 수도 있을거 같네요.

벅스가 라이언 처치(Ryan Church)와 계약하고 오늘 신체검사를 한다고 합니다.

그의 계약에는 올해 1.5M의 연봉과 1.32M의 인센티브를 받는 것으로 알려져있는데, 2.82M의 금액은 작년에 메츠(& 애틀란타)에서 받았던 2.8M과 비슷한 금액인데, 아무래도 그의 등부상이 염려되어 이런 많은 인센티브를 부여한 것으로 생각됩니다.

The bonuses: $75,000 each for 350, 375 and 400 plate appearances, $125,000 each for 425, 450 and 475 plate appearances, and $180,000 each for 500, 550, 575 and 600 plate appearances.
인센티브 내역인데, 벅스가 생각하는 그의 포지션은 주전 우익수가 아니라 제 4의 외야수이기때문에 실제로 600타석까지 들어서서 모든 인센티브를 받을 수 있을지는 회의적입니다.

최근에 벅스가 행한 무브중에 크로스비 딜(1년에 1M + 인센티브 0.5M)만큼 좋은 계약같습니다.

이 딜이 공식화되면 벅스의 40인 로스터는 완전 체워지게 됩니다.

다만 올해 오프닝데이에 맞춰 25인 로스터를 빅리그용으로 가려야 하는데, 이 부분에 있어 고민을 해야될 것으로 생각됩니다.

우선 투수는 Jose Ascanio, Zach Duke, Joel Hanrahan, Kevin Hart, Steven Jackson, Paul Maholm, Charlie Morton, Ross Ohlendorf, Donnie Veal, Javier Lopez정도가 확정적이고, Chris Jakubauskas, Evan Meek, Daniel McCutchen이 나머지 1~2자리로 경쟁을 펼칠 것으로 예상됩니다.

포수는 Ryan Doumit, Jason Jaramillo가 확정적입니다.

내야수는 Ronny Cedeno, Ronny Cedeno, Akinori Iwamura, Ramon Vazquez, Andy LaRoche, Garrett Jones정도가 예상되지만, 벅스가 만약 가렛 존스를 외야수로 생각한다면 Jeff Clement가 제 3의 포수겸 1루수로 로스터를 차지할 수도 있을거 같습니다.

그렇지 않고서 처치를 영입하였기에 존스를 1루수로 고정시킨다면 클레맨트는 인디애나폴리스(벅스 트리플 A팀)에서 시즌을 시작할 것으로 예상되네요. 물론 끊임없이 터져나오고 있는 더밋의 트레이드가 현실이 된다면 포수포지션으로 빅리그에 안착할 수도 있겠지만, 벅스는 클레맨트를 데려올 당시부터 포수보다는 1루수로 쓸 생각을 몇 번 드러냈습니다.

외야수는 Andrew McCutchen, Lastings Milledge, Brandon Moss, Delwyn Young에 처치까지 합세한다면 5명 정도가 될 것 같습니다. 산체스(Freddy Sanchez)가 트레이드된 이후 후반기에 주로 2루수로 출전했던 델윈 영의 경우는 이와무라를 데려오면서 약간의 불만을 표출하기도 했지만, 더 이상의 소란을 피우진 않았습니다.

해서 영의 경우는 그가 다저스에서 건너왔을때에 원래 직책(제 4의 외야수겸 대타)으로 돌아갈 것으로 예상됩니다.

다만 룰 5 드레프트로 데려온 John Raynor의 경우가 끼여있기때문에 상황이 조금 애매합니다.
그는 적어도 올시즌만큼은 빅리그 로스터에 필히 있어야하기때문이고, 작년시즌 트리플 A와 AFL에서 좋은 모습을 보여 콜업준비를 마친 Jose Tabata가 있기때문에 외야수가 (쓸때없이) 넘쳐나고 말았습니다.

물론 타석에 들어서서 타격은 하지않고 공만 바라보고 있는 모스를 DFA시키는 경우도 생길 수 있을거 같습니다. 모스의 경우는 더 이상의 마이너 옵션이 없는 관계로 처치 계약으로 가장 손해를 보는 선수가 될거 같습니다.

투수를 11명으로 끌고 갈 것이냐, 12명으로 끌고 갈 것이냐에 따라 외야수의 숫자와 내야의 Neil Walker의 행선지도 결정될 거 같습니다. 닐 워커는 최근에 트레이드 루머가 나오고 있는데, 아무래도 알바레스(Pedro Alvarez)때문에 어쩔 수없는 거 같습니다.

McCutchen, Hanson are just in time to save NL Rookie of the Year race

When the Pirates traded Nate McLouth to the Braves for three prospects last week, it was designed to help Pittsburgh in the future and the Braves right now.

However, there was a hidden fringe benefit to this trade that will probably matter most historically: It put some viable candidates into what otherwise was shaping up as the worst NL Rookie of the Year battle since Jerome Walton and Dwight Smith made up two-thirds of the 1989 Cubs' outfield and the top two spots in the NL Rookie voting.

By clearing out McLouth, the Pirates created the room to summon their top prospect, Andrew McCutchen. And in conjunction with obtaining McLouth, the Braves completed a bit of late-spring cleaning by waiving 43-year-old Tom Glavine and promoting 22-year-old Tommy Hanson to join the rotation.

This race was promising all the pizzazz of a 24-hour mah-jongg channel. It was actually making the AL's race seem exciting. At least in the Junior Circuit the front-runners have been two players with real pedigree in Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus and Tigers starter Rick Porcello, although both were having nice, but hardly eye-opening rookie campaigns. And the AL also has seen touted prospects such as Orioles catcher Matt Wieters, White Sox infielder Gordon Beckham and Rays starter David Price promoted with still enough time to become legitimate factors for the rookie award.

By keeping a prospect in the minors for a few extra months, teams can get 6 1/2 seasons from a player before free agency rather than six. In addition, players who rank in the top 17 percent of those with more than two years of service time and fewer than three gain Super Two rights and are eligible for arbitration. So teams try to gauge when it's safe to promote their best players so that they will not be in that 17 percent. The accepted safe period to avoid Super Two status is usually after Memorial Day, which was May 25 this year.

GM : Trade not financially motivated

The Pirates' trade of All-Star outfielder Nate McLouth had some players on the team and fans in Pittsburgh scratching their heads. General manager Neal Huntington tried to explain his rationale for the deal in an e-mail to Pirates season-ticket holders.

I am grateful that he has the faith in me, our baseball operations staff and the processes we have in place to approve a move like this, despite the risk of public backlash on him personally and the organization as a whole."

On Wednesday, the Pirates dealt McLouth, one of their best players, to the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of the Braves' top prospects, along with pitchers Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke. The 27-year-old McLouth set career highs last season with a .276 batting average, 26 homers and 94 RBIs.

First baseman Adam LaRoche was one of the more vocal Pirates players in discussing his anger toward the trade.

Well, you can only do that for so long until guys just kind of ... well, they know."

개인적으로 이 트레이드를 반기고 있습니다. 분명 (트레이드되기 전의) 맥로스는 벅스의 최다 타점자이며 가장 좋은 생산력을 지닌 타자 중에 하나였습니다. 볼넷비율(10.8%)과 BABIP, WOBA지수는 갈수록 상승하고 있지만, 개선되지 않는 수비범위와 갈수록 떨어지는 UZR지수는 분명 문제가 있어 보였고 지역언론에서 꾸준히 제기되었던 그의 수비범위는 분명 향후 2~3년 후에 그는 더 이상 CF가 아닌 코너외야수가 될 것으로 예측했었습니다.

그리고 본문에서도 나와있듯이 멕커첸의 진행을 더 이상 막을 수가 없는것도 하나의 이유일 겁니다. 비단 멕커첸만이 아닌 양키스에서 데려온 타바타(Jose Tabata)의 거취도 이제는 신중히 생각해야했기에 이런 결정을 하지 않았을까 합니다.

Ranking Challenges: The moment that he signed (or signed again, depending on how you look at it), Alvarez instantly became the top prospect in the system. Morris' youth and his performance after Tommy John surgery gives him an advantage over Lincoln, who is coming back from the same procedure, while the two over-slot 2008 draftees fit in between. Walker was a rather easy (albeit uninspiring) choice to follow at number eight, and the number nine through 11 slots could be occupied by any of the next 10 players.
일단 모든 사이트에서 추측한대로 6월 드레프트에서 벅스 1라운드(전체 2번)에 지명된 페드로 알바레스(Pedro Alvarez)가 1위와 별 5개를 받았습니다. 그리고 드레프트 이전에 벅스 최고의 유망주였던 앤드류 맥커첸(Andrew McCutchen)이 2위와 별 5개를 받았습니다. 일단 팀 유망주중에 별 5개짜리가 2명이 있다는것은 호의적인 소식일 수 있습니다.

뒤이어 다저스에서 받아온 브라이언 모리스(Bryan Morris)는 일단 현재 토미 존 서저리를 받은 어깨가 부상이 아니라 다리쪽의 부상이라서...암튼 복귀는 내년 5월달이라고 하네요.
그 외에 5~7위는 별로 기대안하고 있습니다.
8위에 선정된 닐 워커(Neil Walker)같은 경우는 아무래도 페드로 알바레스의 성장속도나 컨버전 여부에 따라 워커의 포지션이 결정되지 않을까 싶습니다. 일단 08시즌에 트리플A팀에서 풀시즌을 소화했기때문에 내년에 3루부분에서 역시 다저스에서 건너온 앤디 라로쉬와 경쟁을 하지 않을까 생각됩니다.
9위는 올해의 벅스 마이너리거로 뽑힌 Jim Negrych가 선정되었습니다.
단지 의문인것은 브라이언 프라이데이(Brian Friday)가 10위라는 것과 양키스에서 건너온 다니엘 맥커첸(Daniel McCutchen)이 선정되지 못했다는 점, 쉴비 포드(Shelby Ford)의 이름을 찾아볼 수도 없다는 것입니다.
제이미 로막은 아무래도 나이(85년생)때문에 순위가 밀리지 않았나 싶네요.

The Pirates signed pitcher Chris Cullen to a minor league contract. Cullen, 22, was 5-1 with a 3.20 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 27 walks in 56 innings for Edmonton in the independent Golden Baseball League this past summer. He previously pitched at Michigan State University.

Management's plan, as detailed by director of player development Kyle Stark, is to have the franchise's prized draft pick start out in high Class A at Lynchburg, Va., or, if Alvarez is not deemed ready, in low Class A with the new affiliate in Charleston, W.Va.

"If Pedro's ready to go, we're going to be aggressive with him," Stark said. "It depends on what we see from him, how he adjusts to the game, what kind of shape he's in, a lot of factors. But I can tell you we're not going to rush him just to make up for lost time."

Most draft picks start out in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League or the short-season New York-Penn League. But, because of Alvarez's much-publicized contract dispute, he was unable to play in either of those late-summer leagues. His only action came in September with a month in the Florida Instructional League, but that is not considered formal.

No statistics were kept for Alvarez's performance in Florida, but team officials who witnessed him -- including Pirates manager John Russell -- were effusive in their praise of his hitting and satisfied with his defense at third base.

"As advertised," Stark said of the bat. "He projects to be a middle-of-the-order bat, and that's exactly what he looked like."

A debut in high Class A would not be unprecedented. The Baltimore Orioles started catcher Matt Wieters -- the player the Pirates bypassed in the 2007 draft -- at that level before he quickly moved to Class AA on his way to becoming Baseball America's minor league player of the year.
