General manager Neal Huntington has identified two needs that he would like to address this offseason -- finding a right-handed power bat and finding a veteran starter. The Pirates will certainly look to both the trade and free-agent market to address both of these needs. The organization will not overpay on a fill-in free agent of sorts, but there are certainly needs that must be addressed and can't be found within the farm system.

It seems to me that Evan Meek made the biggest turnaround after being sent down to the Minors. He had 17 walks in 57-plus innings, but four of those were intentional. Also, he allowed fewer hits than innings pitched and only two homers. Teams only hit .195 against him in Triple-A Indianapolis. In his last three outings with the Pirates, he pitched six scoreless innings. What will Pittsburgh do with him?

First, David, nice job on the research. It made my job a little bit easier and will make my answer a little bit shorter since you already supported the fact that Meek did, indeed, impress in the Minors. It was clear quite quickly that Meek was overmatched in trying to make the jump from Double-A in 2007 to the Majors in 2008. If it hadn't been for his status as a Rule 5 guy, then he certainly would have started the season with Double-A Altoona.

However, once the experiment of having Meek pitch out of the Pirates' bullpen ran dry, the club was extremely pleased that the Rays didn't take him back. The Pirates see a high ceiling in Meek's power arm, assuming that the right-hander learns to channel his velocity. Meek is currently playing winter ball in Mexico, where he has allowed three earned runs on seven hits in six appearances (4 1/3 innings).

Meek will have to be added to the Pirates' 40-man roster in November, or else he will be exposed (and likely snatched up) in this year's Rule 5 Draft. I expect the Pirates will protect him by making him a 40-man addition and for Meek to compete in Spring Training for a spot on the big league club. Realistically, I'd project him to start '09 in Triple-A, but he will certainly be looked at as a Major League option because of the improvements he made this year.

With the injury to Brandon Moss, are the Pirates able to file a grievance against the Red Sox for maybe another Minor League prospect?

No, the Pirates have no plans to file a grievance against the Red Sox. Management has no reason to believe that Boston traded Moss knowing that he had this sort of knee injury. Moss complained of pain in his knee only once while with Boston (during a series against the Rays in late June-early July), and when the Red Sox asked him if he'd like to have it checked out at that point, Moss opted against an MRI. Again, there is no indication that the Red Sox suspected the injury to be more than a possible slight meniscus tear.

Is there any possibility that Zach Duke will be in the team's starting rotation next year? For that matter, are any of the 2008 starters penciled in the rotation?

Duke will certainly have a chance to be in the rotation next season, but he is not guaranteed a spot as was the case last year. For that matter, the only '08 starter who has been penciled in is Paul Maholm, for obvious reasons. Duke, like the other seven-or-so candidates, will fight for one of the other four rotation spots in Spring Training, with little to no credence being given to who may have been in the rotation in past years. In Duke's case, if he doesn't make the rotation, he could be plugged into a bullpen role.

현재론 09시즌에 확정된 선발은 폴 마홈밖에 없다고 하네요. 나머지 7명이서 4자리를 두고 경쟁한다고 하네요.

How fast do you see Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez moving through the Pirates farm system? I am really looking forward to seeing Andrew McCutchen and Tabata in the outfield at the same time.

Because the dragged out negotiations and grievance process kept Alvarez from playing at all in the Minors and from playing winter ball, I think that will keep him from being ready to arrive in Pittsburgh in 2009. The organization was optimistic that Alvarez could make a swift move up the organization ladder and be in a Major League uniform in '09, but that was assuming he signed early. That said, I'd expect him to be in the Majors by the end of the 2010 season.

Tabata will be 20 most of next season, which he will likely spend at the Triple-A level. Just think, by late next summer, we're looking at a strong possibility of Alvarez and Tabata playing with each other in Indy. And while I think Alvarez will still make his Major League debut before Tabata, I wouldn't be surprised to see the young outfielder here before the end of the '10 season either. If not then, it should be 2011 for sure.

With the dimensions of PNC Park, it is much more advantageous for the Pirates to have their speedier guy in left as opposed to right. There is much more room to cover in left -- and left-center especially -- and there's no doubt that Morgan's speed will allow him to run down more balls there than most outfielders would reach. Think about it this way: you'd rather have a left fielder who can run down potential extra-base hits in the gap and allow that periodic bloop single to drop in right from time to time.

옆에가 PNC park의 규격(?)입니다. 사진을 보면 아시겠지만, 여기는 우익수보다 좌익수의 수비를 더 요구하는 구장입니다. 특히 저 410피트 지점은 수비가 굉장히 까다롭기로 소문났죠. 마치 파즈의 펫코파크 우익수 쪽을 상상해 보시면 아실듯합니다. 일반적으로 코너외야수 중에 상대적으로 좌익수의 수비를 등한시 하는 경향이 많습니다. 그것은 야구의 베이스의 상황을 머리속으로 떠올리면 쉽게 이해하실 수 있는데요. 주자 1루 상황에서 타자가 친 공이 좌익수 앞으로 흘러갈 때와 우익수 앞으로 흘러갔을 때. 그 이후에 주자의 상황은 전혀 다르죠. 물론 지금 한 얘기는 일반적으로 생각했을때의 얘기입니다. 가령, 우익수가 이치로같이 캐넌 암이라면 주자가 3루로 달리는 것에 대해 조금은 망설이겠죠. 쓸때없는 얘기 하나 덧붙이자면, 초기의 야구(19세기라고 생각하시면 될듯)게임에서는 우타자가 압도적으로 많아서 지금의 3루베이스가 1루베이스였고, 왼쪽으로 돌아서 득점했다고 합니다. 그런 맥낙에서 현대야구에서 스위치 포수라 할지라도 포수가 왼손으로 송구를 하지 않는거죠.

각설하고, 브랜던 모스보다 스피드가 있는 니제어 모건을 좌익수에 배치하는 것이 홈어드벤티지(이것도 어떻게 보면 그렇죠)가 더 생기는 것이고, 텍사스성 안타(bloop single)는 자주 생기는 것이 아니기에 무시해도 된다는....

What is the deal with Freddy Sanchez? Is he going to be healthy at the start of next year?

Sanchez was bothered all season by pain in his right shoulder, but he is expected to make a full recovery over the offseason. There is no need for any sort of offseason surgery. Almost everyone seems to believe that rest is all that is needed for Sanchez to get back to 100 percent strength in his shoulder, and that's just something he wasn't able to get during the season. He should be ready for all activities at the start of Spring Training.

Realistically, how do you see the starting lineup for next year? You can just type in the word "free agent" if you think there might be one at a certain position.

Obviously, much can change in the next six months, but looking at how things stand now, here's my best guess. I would expect a starting outfield consisting of Nate McLouth, Brandon Moss and Nyjer Morgan to start the year. Morgan made quite the impression with the club in September, and I get the sense that the Pirates aren't yet ready to commit to Andrew McCutchen.

I don't expect the right side of the infield to change, so you can pencil in Adam LaRoche and Sanchez there. With the left side of the infield, however, I can't say the same. I'd have to say that chances are better than even that Jack Wilson will be traded over the next few months, leaving a void at short. I'm hesitant to say that if this happens, Brian Bixler or Luis Cruz would be the replacement, because, quite frankly, neither seems ready for the full-time job. If the Pirates do deal Wilson, there would almost certainly be a push to find a capable replacement from outside the organization.

As for third base, management still seems set on Andy LaRoche over Neil Walker. However, the club does need a right-handed power bat, and if there is an opportunity to pick up a solid right-handed-hitting third baseman from either the free-agent pool or trade market, that would seem to make sense. LaRoche didn't perform well enough in '08 to warrant no competition for a starting role.

Ryan Doumit will be the Opening Day starting catcher. And as for the rotation, well, I'll leave that discussion for another day.

Burnett has about two years of Major League service time, meaning that he is one season away from being arbitration eligible. He'd have three arbitration years before the organization could lose him to free agency. Based on the Pirates' need of another left-handed arm in the bullpen and Burnett's increased success in a later-inning role, yes, I'd expect him to be a part of the bullpen next season.

Alvarez will begin next season with one of the organization's two Class A teams, either West Virginia or Lynchburg. GM Neal Huntington hasn't specified which affiliate it will be yet. Management wanted to observe Alvarez in instructional league this fall to see how any layoff may have hurt him and where he'd be best starting. Either way, if Alvarez makes the type of progression that is expected, he likely will move up to the Double-A level fairly quickly.

Hansen received a four-year Major League contract when he was drafted in 2005, and that contract did expire after this past season. However, since Hansen's actual Major League service time is minimal, the Pirates will retain his rights for much longer. Hansen won't be eligible for arbitration for at least two more years, meaning that the Pirates can sign him near the Major League minimum next season.

While there are left-handed free agents to be had, that's not really where the priority lies for the Pirates. It's quite different than two years ago, when that was the club's No. 1 need. Looking at next year's lineup, the Pirates have left-handed power from Nate McLouth, Adam LaRoche, Moss and the switch-hitting Ryan Doumit. If the Pirates do go out in search of another power bat, it will certainly be of the right-handed variety.

That list of pitchers was done to give the most likely candidates for the '09 rotation. It's not necessarily exhaustive, but it is fairly complete. Van Benschoten is still a part of this organization and will be given a chance to make the club in Spring Training. However, when you look at the list of potential candidates the Pirates have going into next season, it's hard to see him denting the top five. He could try to make the club out of the bullpen.
As good as Van Benschoten has been in Triple-A over the past two years, he has not been able to duplicate even half of that success at the big league level. At some point, you have to wonder when -- or if -- he ever will.

You say there is no option at first base other than Adam LaRoche. What about Doug Mientkiewicz? I would rather see him at first than LaRoche. You never see Mientkiewicz quit on a play or not run out a fly ball or ground out. What is the chance of the Pirates going with Doug over Adam?

Mientkiewicz certainly became a fan favorite for his hard-nosed, let's-get-the-uniform-dirty approach this year, but he's not going to supplant LaRoche at first. Both are Gold Glove-caliber first baseman, so defensively you're talking about two of the best. However, LaRoche offers the Pirates the power bat that the club needs in the middle of the lineup. With power at the corner outfield positions looking like it will be limited, power at first base is certainly a priority.

The organization has indicated interest in locking McLouth down with a multi-year contract and would have to be blown away by any offer to let him go. Quite frankly, the Yankees, who are in need of a center fielder, don't have the players to make that type of offer. Remember, the Pirates already pillaged New York's farm system for four prospects in July.

“I felt it was important to have a good teaching staff but I also have come to believe that we need at least one veteran coach on the staff, too, especially with us having such a young team,” Huntington said. “I think having a veteran baseball man would be a great resource for not only the players but John and the rest of our staff.”

That veteran coach is likely to fill Frazier’s spot at first base. One possibility is Luis Issac, fired this week as Cleveland’s bullpen coach after spending 45 years in the Indians’ organization, 21 on the major-league coaching staff.

얼마 전 잘린 루이스 이삭(Luis Issac) 전 인디언스 불펜코치와 같은 사람이 가능하다. 그는 인디언스 조직에서 45년 동안 활약했었다.

One interesting name popping up for the pitching coach vacancy is Rick Peterson, who was fired by the New York Mets in June when manager Willie Randolph was also fired. He is the son of former Pirates GM Harding Peterson.

갑자기 나온 흥미로운 명단에 릭 페터슨(Rick Peterson) 전 메츠 투수 코치가 거론되었다. 그는 벅스의 전 GM인 하딩 페터슨(Harding Peterson)의 아들이기도 하다.

Peterson, 53, was the Pirates bullpen coach in 1984-85 and a major-league pitching coach with the Chicago White Sox (1994-95) and Oakland (1998-2003).

Another possibility is Rod Nichols, pitching coach for Philadelphia’s Class AAA Lehigh Valley farm club. Nichols was the pitching coach when Russell managed the Phillies’ top farm clubs in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Ottawa in 2006 and 2007.

또 다른 가능성 있는 인물은 로드 니콜스(Rod Nichols) 필라델피아 트리플 A팀의 투수코치이다. 그는 06년에 스크랜턴과 윌러크 버러, 07년 오타와에서 러셀과 함께 했었다.

Pirates outfielder Nyjer Morgan will not play winter ball in the Mexican Pacific League as originally scheduled after suffering a strained hamstring during the final week of the season.

나이저 모건(Nyjer Morgan)은 시즌 말미에 부상당했던 햄스트링 때문에 예정되었던 맥시코 윈터 리그에서 플레이 하지 않을 겁니다.

Pirates rookie right-hander Jimmy Barthmaier has also been dropped from the Scottsdale roster in the Arizona Fall League after being pressed into service for two major-league starts late in the season when left-hander Tom Gorzelanny suffered a sprained ligament on the middle finger of his pitching hand. Right-hander Derek Hankins, who spent the season at Class AA Altoona, replaces Barthmaier.

사실 25홈런이지만 앨투나로 승격이후로는 삽질 좀 했네요. 33경기를 그곳에서 뛰었는데...33경기라 함은 그가 everyday players였는지는 확실치 않지만 적어도 한 달 이상을 앨투나에서 뛰었다는 건데....성적이 시원찮군요.

There are the indications the Pirates are considering hiring a young broadcaster to serve as the No. 2 play-by-play voice behind Greg Brown. That would seemingly make Jason Dambach, the well-regarded lead broadcaster at Altoona, a strong candidate for the opening.
