Conditioning camp가 지난 화요일부터 목요일까지 열렸습니다.

Closer Matt Capps' father, Mike, died unexpectedly -- at age 61 -- Oct. 22 in Capps' native Douglasville, Ga., the result of a fall at the family home.

"Never could have seen this coming," Capps said. "It's been a really difficult time for the whole family."
첫날 캠프가 열리기 전에 캡스는 아버지의 부고소식을 접했다네요. 조지아주 출신이기 때문에 가는데 시간을 걸리지 않은거 같습니다.

Capps was among 13 players participating in the morning workouts, all off the field and none baseball-related. The others : Andy LaRoche, Lastings Milledge, Kevin Hart, Evan Meek, Delwyn Young, Steve Pearce, Craig Hansen, Jose Ascanio, Justin Thomas, Phil Dumatrait, Jeff Clement and Jonathan Van Every.
일단 캠프에 참여한 인원은 라로쉬, 밀리지, 하트, 미크, 영, 피어스, 한센, 아스카니오, 토마스, 두마트레이트, 클레맨트, 조나단 반 에브리(Jonathan Van Every)였습니다.

에브리는 지난 7월에 보스턴에 의해 방출되었는데, 벅스와 계약한거 같은데 따로 소식을 들은게 없네요.

Hart, a late addition to the camp, sounded upbeat about the Pirates' immediate future. That included his own, after a rough time following the trade : "What a lot of us need, I think, is a fresh start. There's a lot of talent here, and you saw that at times last season. We played some good baseball, clean baseball in some games. But weren't consistent. We need a full spring training together."

Hart is at full health after finishing the year shut down by a strained oblique.
케빈 하트(Kevin Hart)가 이런 저런 소리를 하는데, 별 영양가는 없네요.

Meek had an oblique issue, too, and remains on the 60-day disabled list, but he also pronounced himself 100 percent.

As for that 100-mph fastball he vowed is coming next year : "Not in spring training. I'll save it for the season."
옆구리쪽 부상으로 60일자 DL에 있는 이븐 미크(Evan Meek)는 현재 상태가 좋다고 하네요. 100마일을 던진다는 소리는 스프링 캠프가 아니라 정규시즌에 보여준다네요. 제이슨 슈밋도 90마일은 던진다고 했죠. 단지 치기어려운 100마일을 던진다면 인증하겠는데....

Thomas, the left-handed reliever recently claimed off waivers from Seattle, welcomed the opportunity to enter what appears to be a wide-open race : "I just came off my first full year in the bullpen, my first full year in Triple-A, and I was streaky. My walks were terrible. But I also felt like I threw the ball well, for the most part, and I just need to get more consistent."

Thomas, 25, had a 4.48 ERA in 53 appearances for Tacoma, including some unsightly splits : 1.48 ERA vs. lefties, 6.50 vs. righties, but the Pirates have told him -- as they tell all left-handers -- they are not interested in specialists.

"That's fine," Thomas said. "I know I can get guys out from both sides."
얼마전 시애틀이 웨이버시킨 토마스(Justin Thomas)도 컨디셔닝 캠프에 참여했는데, 작년에 불펜으로 첫 풀시즌이었지만, 볼넷을 남발했다라네요. 토마스는 올해 트리플 A 불펜에서 60.1이닝동안 40BB를 허용했습니다. 볼넷을 줄일 필요가 있다는데, 당연한 소리를 하네요. 일단은 좌완불펜이 부족한 벅스 입장에서는 스캠에서 실전처럼 테스트를 하겠죠. 시원찮으면 나중에 강등해도 되니...

벅스가 내년 스프링 캠프 일정을 발표했습니다. 일단 이 일정은 동부시간기준이고 잠정적이어서 시간이나 날짜가 변경될 수도 있다고는 하지만 매년 이렇게 써놓기만 하고 변하는 경우가 잘 없죠. 확정이라고 보시면 될 겁니다. 특이하게 스프링 캠프 첫 경기를 플로리다 주립대와 하네요. 4월 1일까지 스프링 캠프 일정이고 4월 2일과 3일날은 필리스의 홈에서 2경기를 치른 후 하루 휴식 후 다저스와의 오프닝데이를 맞이하게 됩니다.

아시겠지만 펜실베니아 주에는 두 개의 빅리그 팀이 있고 (일단은) 라이벌인 필리스와 매년 초에 이렇게 경기를 합니다. 다저스가 오프닝 데이 이전에 엔젤스와 경기하는 것과 비슷하다고 보시면 될 겁니다.

Closer Matt Capps, one of 13 Pirates at PNC Park this week for a voluntary conditioning camp, was offered by Pirates management to the Milwaukee Brewers in an attempt to trade for shortstop J.J. Hardy, according to an American League source. Hardy went to the Minnesota Twins Nov. 6 in a trade that sent outfielder Carlos Gomez to the Brewers.
지난 얘기를 알려서 선수들의 사기를 떨어뜨리는 일이라고 생각 할 수도 있고, 그냥 뉴스라고 생각할 수도 있겠죠.
일단은 캡스(Matt Capps)가 원래는 맥주네의 하디(J.J. Hardy)의 트레이드 상대였다네요. 캡스입장에서는 호프만 앞에서 셋업맨으로 싫을수도 있겠지만, 그의 경험을 배운다면 더 좋아질 수도 있었겠죠. 일단 이 딜은 파토나고 바로 하디는 트윈스의 고메즈와 교환되었습니다.

Outspoken Delwyn Young opted to stay mum on the team's abandoning him at second base in favor of newly acquired Akinori Iwamura: "It is what it is. I'm going to leave it at that. I'm taking the high route."
얼마전 이와무라를 영입하면서 2루수자리를 빼앗기게 된 델윈 영(Delwyn Young)이 단단히 삐졌나 봅니다. 원래 2루수출신이었지만, 수비가 너무 안좋아서 다저스가 그를 외야로 컨버젼시켰다가 시즌 후 떠나간 페리 힐(Perry Hill)에 의해 수비가 좋아졌지만, 여전히 평균급의 수비수에는 한참 모자란 필딩률을 기록중이죠.
영의 경우는 내년 시즌 후에 연봉중재자가 되기때문에 1년 후에 트레이드할 수도 있고, 지금 불만많은 상황에서 지금 트레이드 할 수도 있어보입니다. 그가 대타로써는 아주 좋은 활약을 하고 있기때문에, 대타겸 제 4의 외야수를 구하는 팀에게는 좋은 선수일 겁니다.

Left fielder Lastings Milledge has acknowledged for the first time that his right hand -- the one that shut him down for two months early in 2009 -- hampered his power. But he expressed optimism it will be back at full strength by next spring training's end.
뭐 별소리아니네요. 네츠에서 손목다친걸로 파워감소되었는데, 지금은 괜찮다네요. 손목쪽에 부상당하면 일단은 유구골 부상을 의심해봐야하고, 유구골 부상이면 파워감소가 필수적(?)으로 수반되죠.

Pitcher Craig Hansen, on the disabled list most of this past season with a nerve disorder, was cleared this week by doctors to begin re-teaching his arm how to throw. The nerves in his upper back have shown signs of regenerating, so he basically has to rebuild his upper-body strength -- including a throwing motion.
시즌 초반 60일자 DL에 올랐던 크렉 한센(Craig Hansen)은 투구를 시작할 모양입니다. 이 리포터에는 나오지 않는데, 일단 DL사유는 목경련이었죠. 그의 정신창란(nerve disorder)는 예전부터 있었던 병력이기때문에 특별하지는 않습니다. 그냥 이 녀석 버렸으면 좋겠네요. 자리도 아깝다는...

이런걸 보면 확실히 BA가 대도시를 연고로 한 구단들의 유망주에게는 평가가 후하다는 것을 느낄 수 있을 겁니다. BA의 독자들 중 많은 수를 차지하는게 강팀이죠. 고로 그 강팀을 응원하는 사람들이 많은 빅마켓팀의 유망주에게 상대적으로 좋은 평가를 내는 경우가 많죠. 그래야 그들도 판매부수를 올리고, 광고로 수익창출도 되니까요. 한센과 모스(Brandon Moss) 모두 BA가 만들어낸 과대평가된 유망주일 뿐입니다.

Jeff Clement, acquired from Seattle in the Jack Wilson trade, is planning to prepare for first base and catcher heading into spring training : "I'm hoping I still get a chance to catch, whether it would be every day or backup."
시즌 후 자발적인 컨디셔닝 캠프(conditioning camp)에 참여한 제프 클레맨트(Jeff Clement)가 1루수와 포수 모두를 준비하고 있다고 합니다. 하지만 여전히 자신은 포수로 나서고 싶다네요. 백업이던 주전이든 상관없이...

최근에 벅스가 더밋(Ryan Doumit)을 트레이드할려는 움직임이 포착되었는데, 시즌 초 더밋의 부상때 하라미요(Jason Jaramillo)가 잘 이끌어줬죠. 어쩌면 더밋을 보내는 시나리오가 가능할지도 모르겠군요.

Andy LaRoche, who spent a week in Instructional League working at second base before the Iwamura trade apparently rendered that moot, said he told Pedro Alvarez to feel welcome at third base. "If he's ready ... get him up here. Obviously, he rakes. Even if he's not a Gold Glove-caliber third baseman, his offense will make up for it. He's not bad at third base, either."
이와무라 트레이드 소식이 나오기 전까지 플로리다 교육리그에서 2루수비연습을 했던 라로쉬(Andy LaRoche)가 페드로 알바레스(Pedro Alvarez)가 빨리 올라오기를 바란다는 대인배적인 소리를 했네요. 골드 글러브급 선수는 아니지만 수비가 그렇게 나쁘지많은 않다면서, 타격부진에 시달렸던 최근 벅스 사정을 생각할때 환영한다네요. 과연 자기자리를 빼앗겼을때도 이런 소리를 할지 의문입니다.

이븐 믹크(Even Meek)가 왼쪽 늑골 부상으로 시즌아웃되었습니다.
적어도 한 달은 미스할것이며 2주 정도 공을 던질 수없다고 하는군요. 시즌이 이제 6주 남았으니 자연스레 시즌아웃되는 과정을 밟게 되었습니다.

일단은 15일자 DL로 가는데, 굳이 60일자 DL로 옮기지는 않을거 같습니다.
믹크를 대신해서 스티브 잭슨(Steve Jackson)은 다시 콜업되었습니다. 뭐 버려야할 선수라고 생각하는데도 끝가지 데리고 있는거 보면 이해할 수가 없습니다.

얼마전에 템파에 의해 DFA되었던 존 말론(Jon Meloan)에 대해 벅스가 클레임을 걸었습니다.
다저스 팬들은 아실 겁니다. 이 선수 괜한 고집으로 자신의 미래를 망쳤죠.

암튼 그런 일화(?)는 생략하고 존 말론의 자리를 마련하기 위해 15일자 DL에 있던 타일러 예이츠(Tyler Yates)를 60일자 DL로 이동시켰습니다. 예이츠는 토미존서저리를 받아서 내년에 어느시점에 나올지는 모르겠으나 이 선수에게 의미없이 1M정도를 소비할 정도로 벅스가 재정이 여유롭지 않은데도 뭐하는 짓인지 모르겠네요.

어제 경기에서 3도루 경기를 했던 앤드류 멕커첸(Andrew McCutchen)은 2005년 7월 26일 플로리다 원정에서 맷 로튼(Matt Lawton)이 3도루를 기록한 이후 첫 번째로 3도루를 한 벅스의 선수가 되었다고 하는군요.
매년 루징레코드에 있다보니 아무것도 못하고 있죠-0-

얼마전에 심판과 동료와 감독들에게 행폐를 부리다가 "Unprofessional"로 무기한 출정정지를 당했던 브라이언 모리스(Bryan Morris)에 대한 징계가 풀렸습니다. 얼마전까지 헌팅턴 단장은 시즌이 끝날때쯤해서 징계를 풀거라고 했는데 달력을 잘못봤나요? 아님 한국의 모 행정기관을 따라하는건가요?

한참 늦은 소식이지만 벅스가 올해 드레프트 6라운드(전체 175번픽)인 자크 본 로젠버그(Zack Von Rosenberg)와 계약을 맺었습니다. 1.2M으로 계약을 맺었는데 이 선수가 대학진학예정이었지만 돈으로 매수했다고 보시면 될 겁니다.

그리고 4라운드(전체 115번픽)인 잭 돌슨(Zack Dodson)과 60만달러에 계약을 했습니다. 사무국 추천 계약금은 25만달러 정도입니다.

8라운드(전체 235번픽)인 콜튼 케인(Colton Cain)과는 1.125M으로 계약을 했습니다.

이와 더불어 그들의 10라운더(전체 295번픽)인 조이 숀펠드(Joey Schoenfeld)와 계약을 했습니다. 이 선수에게 19만 5천달러를 지불했는데 사무국 추천금액이 8만 5천달러 쯤임을 감안할때 많은 금액을 지불했네요. 개인적으로 고졸포수에게 게임을 리딩해나가는 능력은 믿지않는 편이라서 쓸때없는 돈을 쓴게 아닐까 하는 생각을 해봤습니다.
6-2에 200파운드가 나가면서 샌디에이고 주립대 진학예정자였다고 하는군요. 일단 스카우터는 숀펠드가 나중에는 외야수나 코너 인필더(1, 3루수)가 될 거라고 하는군요.

이로써 벅스는 51명의 지명자중 22명과 계약을 마쳤으며 그들의 10라운드까지의 11명 모두와 계약하면서 이들에게 투자한 금액만 거의 8.11M에 다달았다고 하는군요.
1라운더로 뽑은 산체스를 마음에 들지않아하시는 분이 많은데 전 동일한 금액으로 올시즌 효율적인 베팅을 했다고 생각합니다. 저 8M중에 5M정도를 한 사람에게 소비하는것보다 11사람에게 소비하는게 더 좋았다고 생각되네요.

얼마전에 카즈와의 경기에서 푸올스를 마췄던 벅스의 마무리투수인 맷 캡스(Matt Capps)는 자신은 그럴 의도가 아니었다고 해명하네요. 전 뭐 아무렴 상관없습니다. 그게 그럴의도였는지 어땠는지는 아무도 알 길이 없으니까요. 확실하게 제가 알고 있는 사실은 "캡스가 푸올스를 맞췄다는 것입니다." That's all.

트윈스, 다수의 벅스 요원들을 관찰하다

The Pirates, who are apparently not done dealing yet, have engaged in trade discussions with the Twins regarding a number of players, major league sources said Thursday.

At present, Minnesota is most interested in second baseman Freddy Sanchez and relievers Matt Capps and John Grabow, the sources said.
특히 트윈스는 벅스의 2루수인 산체스(Freddy Sanchez)와 릴리퍼 캡스(Matt Capps)와 그래보우(John Grabow)를 눈여겨 보고 있답니다.

Twins general manager Bill Smith declined to discuss any specific trade targets during a Thursday telephone interview. His team has been on a run recently, winning six of nine games to pull within three of the American League Central-leading Tigers. The teams are set to meet at the Metrodome this weekend (Saturday, MLB on FOX, 4:10 p.m.).
일단 트윈스의 GM인 스미스(Bill Smith)씨는 구체적인 타켓에 대한 인터뷰를 회피했지만, 최근 트윈스의 상승세로 벅스와 이번주 일요일 메트로돔에서 만날거라고 하는군요.

"We're playing a lot better now," Smith said. "We've won four series in a row on the road. Our starting pitching is taking us deeper into games.

Alexi Casilla, Minnesota's Opening Day second baseman, is currently in the minors. ("He's playing hard, and he understands why he's there," Smith said. "At the time he's ready, at the time we have a spot for him, that's when (the call-up) would happen.") Nick Punto, batting .212, and Matt Tolbert, .187, have been starting at second recently.
트윈스의 현재 상황을 몰랐는데 간략하게 다루고 있네요. 트윈스의 오프닝데이 2루수였던 카실라(Alexi Casilla)는 현재 마이너에 내려갔는데 자신이 왜 내려갔는지를 잘 알고 있다고 하는군요. 아마 성적이 안나왔겠죠. 뒤를 이어 푼토(Nick Punto)와 톨버트(Matt Tolbert)역시 2루수로 쓰이고 있지만 도토리 키재기라는군요.
트윈스의 2루수부분 생산성(특히 OPS)은 리그에서 3번째로 좋지 않은 성적이라는군요.
그에 반해 벅스의 산체스는 부상에서 회복되어 .316의 타율과 2루수겸 2번타자로 솔리드한 활약을 하고 있습니다.

By reputation, the Twins have been reluctant to add big contracts at the midseason deadline. If that continues to be the case this year, Sanchez might prove to be a tricky acquisition.

His contract includes an $8 million option for next year that vests after 635 plate appearances or 600 plate appearances plus an All-Star appearance. (He is on pace to attain that easily.) If the club declines its option, he'll receive a $600,000 buyout.
다만 트윈스가 망설일 가능성이 있는 부분이 산체스의 연봉문제인데, 산체스는 올시즌 후 내년에 퍼포먼스 옵션이 붙었고 현재 328타석에 들어서고 있으며 635타석에만 들어서거나 600타석 이상 & 올스타전 출전만 하더라도 옵션이 실행된다고 합니다. 물론 현재의 추세대로라면 이 옵션의 실행가능성은 아주 높죠. 구단이 이 옵션을 거절한다면 산체스는 0.6M을 받고 바이아웃된다고 합니다.

So, any deal involving Sanchez will be more complicated than the usual one-year rental.
해서 보통의 일년짜리 랜탈과는 조금 다른 조건이라서 고민이라고 하는군요.

In 2006, when he won the National League batting title, Sanchez spent a lot of the season at third base. If he could play that position again, it would open up a new set of trade possibilities for Pittsburgh.

A number of teams — Boston, Seattle, Cincinnati, San Francisco — may look to add a hitter at third.
산체스는 06시즌에 3루수로써 리그 타격왕을 획득했는데 만약 그가 다시 3루수에서 생산적인 모습을 보여준다면 트레이드 가치는 더 상승할거라고 합니다. 그런 조건이 된다면 3루수를 찾을법한 구단은 보스턴, 시애틀, 신시네티, SF가 될거라고 하는군요.

개인적인 생각이지만 트윈스가 필요로하는 곳은 8회셋업맨이 아닐까 싶습니다. 돈걱정이 된다면 산체스보단 그래보우를 추천하고 싶군요.

... The Yankees' bullpen performed well during their recent seven-game winning streak, which ended Thursday night, but they are keeping a close eye on Arizona reliever Chad Qualls. He has converted 13 of 17 save opportunities this year but blew his latest opportunity Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.

Brian Bruney has been inconsistent for New York since returning from the disabled list in mid-June; if that trend continues, the team's incentive to acquire Qualls would increase.

And the closely-watched Magglio Ordonez hasn't done much since homering on June 25. He's hitting .100 (2-for-20) with no extra-base hits in his past five games.
디트로이트는 그들의 득점부분의 부재, 오도네즈(Magglio Ordonez)의 삽질로 외야수를 찾고 있다는군요. 개인적으로 어떤 누군가가 몇 명보이는데 해당팀 팬들에게 반감이 생각되기에 이만 줄입니다.

The Pirates signed pitcher Chris Cullen to a minor league contract. Cullen, 22, was 5-1 with a 3.20 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 27 walks in 56 innings for Edmonton in the independent Golden Baseball League this past summer. He previously pitched at Michigan State University.
벅스가 크리스 커런(Chris Cullen)과 마이너계약을 했습니다. 올 여름에 독립리그에서 뛰었다고하니 마이너리그 로스터 채우기 용이 아닐까 싶습니다.

If the Pirates like what they see of Pedro Alvarez in the spring, he could skip the first three rungs of the professional ladder on his way to Pittsburgh.

Management's plan, as detailed by director of player development Kyle Stark, is to have the franchise's prized draft pick start out in high Class A at Lynchburg, Va., or, if Alvarez is not deemed ready, in low Class A with the new affiliate in Charleston, W.Va.

"If Pedro's ready to go, we're going to be aggressive with him," Stark said. "It depends on what we see from him, how he adjusts to the game, what kind of shape he's in, a lot of factors. But I can tell you we're not going to rush him just to make up for lost time."

Most draft picks start out in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League or the short-season New York-Penn League. But, because of Alvarez's much-publicized contract dispute, he was unable to play in either of those late-summer leagues. His only action came in September with a month in the Florida Instructional League, but that is not considered formal.

No statistics were kept for Alvarez's performance in Florida, but team officials who witnessed him -- including Pirates manager John Russell -- were effusive in their praise of his hitting and satisfied with his defense at third base.

"As advertised," Stark said of the bat. "He projects to be a middle-of-the-order bat, and that's exactly what he looked like."

A debut in high Class A would not be unprecedented. The Baltimore Orioles started catcher Matt Wieters -- the player the Pirates bypassed in the 2007 draft -- at that level before he quickly moved to Class AA on his way to becoming Baseball America's minor league player of the year.

요약해서 말하면 알바레스가 하이 싱글A팀인 린츠버그에서 플레이할 수도 있다고 합니다. 하지만 일단 스캠에서 보고서 준비가 안되어있다면 로우 싱글A팀인 찰스턴으로 보낸다고 하네요.
그 모든것은 그(알바레스)에게 달려있다고 하네요. 뭐 당연한거 아니겠어요.
작년에 보라스의 장난으로 그의 계약이 길어졌고, 결국은 가을에 플로리다 교육리그에 보내졌다고...
드레프트되고서는 보통 루키 레벨 걸프 코스트리그(GCL)나 숏시즌인 뉴욕-펜 리그(New York-Penn League)로 보내지지만 그의 낭중지추(囊中之錐)랄까요?
하지만 이런 특별 케이스는 볼티모어의 최고 유망주인 맷 위터스(Matt Wieters)도 그러한 절차를 발았기때문에, 새로울게 없다고 하네요.

Pitchers Brad Lincoln and Danny Moskos, the Pirates' previous two first-round picks, will be in a position to compete for the rotation in Class AA Altoona. Neither has pitched at a higher level than Lynchburg.

Of the prospects currently on the 40-man roster: Outfielder Jose Tabata could make his debut with Class AAA Indianapolis, but he also might stay in Altoona if management decides it does not want two center fielders at the same level with Andrew McCutchen.
7월 양키스와의 트레이드로 건너온 호세 타바타(Jose Tabata)는 트리플 A팀인 인디에나폴리스에서 데뷔할 수도 있지만, 벅스 조직이 두명의 유망주 CF를 같은 곳에서 플레이하기를 꺼린다면 그는 더블 A에서 다시 시즌을 시작할 수도 있다고 합니다. 일단 박힌 돌은 벅스 최고의 유망주인 앤드류 맥커첸(Andrew McCutchen)입니다.

Catcher Steve Lerud and reliever Jeff Sues should start out with Altoona. The same is true of second baseman Jim Negrych, who is not on the 40-man but was the Pirates' 2008 minor league player of the year. And reliever Ronald Uviedo should start out with Lynchburg.
이번에 40인 로스터에 포함된 스티브 렐루드(Steve Lerud)와 릴리퍼 제프 슈즈(Jeff Sues)는 더블 A인 앨투나에서 뛸거라고 하네요. 또한 08시즌 벅스 올해의 마이너리거로 선정되었던 Jim Negrych도 앨투나에서 뛴다고 하네요. 08시즌에 앨투나로 승격되어서 25경기밖에 뛰지 않았으니 당연한 선택이라고 생각합니다. 하지만 같은 포지션에 유망주인 쉘비 포드(Shelby Ford)도 있기때문에 벅스는 어떻게 할지는 고민해봐야 할 문제인거 같네요.
