Daniel McCutchen will get a chance to earn a spot in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ starting rotation in spring training despite never having pitched in a major-league game.
McCutchen knows that opportunity would not have come about if he was still with the New York Yankees, certainly not following an off-season in which they spent $161 million on left-hander CC Sabathia and $82.5 million on right-hander A.J. Burnett in the free-agent market.
Thus, McCutchen realizes it was his good fortune to be traded from the Yankees to the Pirates last July. He came to Pittsburgh along with right-handers Jeff Karstens and Ross Ohlendorf and outfield prospect Jose Tabata for right fielder Xavier Nady and left-handed reliever Damaso Marte.
“I’m just looking for an opportunity to pitch in the major leagues,” McCutchen said. “It would have been great if it would have happened with the Yankees but I just want it to happen with somebody. My dream is to pitch in the major leagues.”
McCutchen, 26, will get a chance to make an impression on manager John Russell and new pitching coach Joe Kerrigan this week as the Pirates hold their annual minicamp for pitchers in Bradenton, Fla. McCutchen will then enter a spring-training battle royale for four open rotation spots behind left-hander Paul Maholm.
“Daniel McCutchen is a real competitor. That really stood out about him immediately after he came over in the trade,” Pirates player development director Kyle Stark said. “I’m sure he will go into spring training and make his case to be on the major-league club. You can count on him being ready to pitch and compete for a job.”

“I’m anxious to get to spring training and show that Pittsburgh made a really good trade last year,” said Moss, who was acquired from Boston last July in a three-way trade deal that also involved the Los Angeles Dodgers. “I’m feeling really good and I should be 100 percent by the time spring training starts.”
Moss hit .222 with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 45 games following the trade.
Meanwhile, the news isn’t good on Pirates left-hander Phil Dumatrait as he has been slow to recover from August shoulder surgery. It appears he will not ready to compete in all drills when spring training begins and likely begin the season on the disabled list.

Former Pirates first baseman and Upper St. Clair High School graduate Sean Casey is one of the many free agents still sitting on the market. Casey hit .322 with 17 RBIs for Boston last season in a career-low 199 at bats.
While Casey enjoyed his time with the Red Sox, he said he would likely retire if he cannot find a situation where he could play more in 2009.
“I’m looking for something that will make it worth my while to get out there and play,” Casey said. “More than a bench role, maybe a platoon or full-time, something I can justify the grind again, justify a year of the grind on a winning team.”
