Having a deep inventory of young talent is a must for a perpetually rebuilding organization like the Pirates. That is why the release of the 2009 Bill James Handbook has to be considered a bit of a bummer for Pirates’ fans.

James also does not place any Pirates among his best 25 young players in baseball, though he does have left-hander Paul Maholm and center fielder Nate McLouth in the top 100.

Pirates center fielder Nate McLouth won his first career Gold Glove this week on the strength of making just one error in 390 total chances last season. However, more advanced statistical metrics suggest McLouth was actually a below-average fielder.

Right-handed reliever Evan Meek, who struggled with the Pirates early in the season as a rookie in 2008, has been added to the 40-man roster. After going 0-1 with a 6.92 ERA in nine games in the major leagues, the 25-year-old bounced back to go 1-1 with two saves and a 2.81 ERA in nine games with Class AA Altoona and 0-0 with two saves and a 2.40 ERA in 23 games with Class AAA Indianapolis.

Two pitchers from the area, LHP Brian Holliday (Moon Area) and RHP Josh Sharpless (Freedom), have become minor-league free agents. Holliday spent seven seasons in the Pirates’ organization, finishing last season with high Class A Lynchburg, while Sharpless pitched for San Francisco’s Class AA Connecticut farm club in 2008.
Holliday is one of 26 players from the Pirates’ organization who became minor-league free agents along with left-handers Corey Hamman, Wanell Macia, Juan Perez and Josh Shortslef; right-handers Adam Bernero, Ryan Drese, Jean Garavito, Blair Johnson, Juan Mateo, Dan Reichart, Marino Salas, Mike Thompson and John Van Benschoten; catchers Carlos Maldonado, Milver Reyes and Steven Suarez; infielders Josh Bonifay, Jason Bowers, Melvin Dorta, Matt Kata and Luis Ordaz; and outfielders Jorge Cortes, Chris Duffy, Jonel Pacheco and Anthony Webster.
